"Banded rails live where land meets sea and rely on healthy saltmarsh habitats, ecosystems facing increasing pressures from sediment, pollution, sea-level rise, and predators.

Because they are ground nesters, successful breeding is a strong indicator that predator control and habitat restoration efforts are working. In other words, if the banded rail is thriving, the whole saltmarsh ecosystem is likely healthy.

As Pest Free Kaipātiki General Manager Annie Dignan says,

“It’s incredibly special to see a story like this unfolding right here in our own backyard in Auckland. People often think rare wildlife only exists in places like Fiordland, but sightings like this show that local restoration truly matters, and together, we can protect and strengthen Kaipātiki’s precious saltmarsh habitats.”

Kaipātiki’s wetlands are buzzing with exciting news. The rare banded rail (moho pererū) has successfully bred right here in Beach Haven.

Battle of the Boots – Charity Football Match

As part of our community engagement focus, we are proud to host the Multiple Sclerosis “Battle of the Boots” Charity Football Match, in collaboration with Multiple Sclerosis Auckland and Harcourts Cooper & Co Real Estate on Sunday 14th September.

We’re thrilled to announce that the teams will be led by none other than Sir Graham Henry - legendary former All Blacks coach - together with his wife, Lady Raewyn Henry. Their involvement brings an extra touch of mana and inspiration to what promises to be a memorable day.

On the field, you’ll see a unique mix of comedians, radio hosts, politicians, football CEOs, and our own Birko representatives - including ex-legends Sam Burfoot and Luke Jorgensen, alongside current stars Dino Botica, Abby Chad and Jamie Govind.

Welcome & warm-up: 1:30 pm
Kick-off: 2:30 pm
After the match: Coaches’ speeches, followed by a fundraising auction

Bring the family down for an afternoon of fun, food, football, and fundraising in support of a cause close to our club’s heart.
