From the Cosi Club in 1986 to Birkenhead RSA today, Tripe N Onions has had a few homes over the years.

Ngataringa Bay, the Netball Club, Takapuna RSA and Birkenhead RSA have all played a part in the club’s story, with plenty of memories made along the way.

From a newspaper ad to 114 members in the club’s opening months.

In 1986, Ron Williams placed an advert in the North Shore Times to see if there was enough interest to start a local Tripe N Onions club.

Around 30 people responded, and the idea quickly gathered momentum. The club settled on meeting on the last Thursday of each month, and by 5 August 1986, membership had already reached 114 people.

That was just under six weeks after the club’s first recorded meeting on 26 June.

What started as a simple newspaper advert had become a substantial North Shore community remarkably quickly.

North Harbour Tripe N Onions isn’t just for one age group. Our evenings bring together families, younger visitors and long-standing members for dinner, games, stories and a good laugh.

The dress code is flexible. Very flexible.

Cards on the table, witches on duty, and enough inflatable ghosts to raise questions with the fire warden.

Yes, that is a butcher-shop birthday cake.

Some clubs get a supermarket sponge.

We had an entire edible butcher’s counter, complete with miniature meat and an understandably concerned butcher.

Subtlety has never been compulsory.

We attract all sorts.

One arrived dressed for London. One arrived dressed for the club. Neither appears to have booked.

Some clubs have guest speakers. We had bagpipes.

Tripe, onions, good company and the occasional unexpected musical performance.

North Harbour Tripe N Onions has been bringing people together for over 30 years, and clearly, no two evenings are quite the same.
