✨ Installation of the Grand Master – Grand Lodge of New Zealand ✨

On Saturday, 26th October 2025, MW Bro Paul Chappel was duly invested as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Antient, Free, and Accepted Masons of New Zealand.

It was a spectacular occasion that also marked the inauguration of the new Regional Structure and the investiture of Grand Lodge Officers. Among those honored were several Matariki brethren — VW Bro Mark Pagulayan, Grand Superintendent of Region 2 (Auckland); VW Bro Daryl Gray, Regional Grand Director of Ceremonies; W Bro Luke Boustridge MNZM, Grand Sword Bearer; W Bro Greg Fowler, Grand Steward; W Bro Mouria Ngati Au, Grand Organist; and of course MW Bro Paul Chappel, Grand Master.

Lodge Matariki No. 476 extends its heartfelt congratulations to these brethren, and to all newly invested officers throughout the country, on their well-deserved preferment.

The event was marked by an exquisite banquet that afforded the Grand Lodge of NZ to mingle with our brethren from the western isles, the Grand Lodges of Australia attending with an impressively large delegation.

The Grand Lodge of New Zealand is once again renewed, and her Lodges once again embark on their journey as Craftsmen — raising a “spiritual house, not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens,” one man at a time.

✨ Special Visit – Celebrating RW Bro Trevor Ridgley PJGW ✨

Lodge Matariki No. 476 shifted our regular meeting to attend a special evening honouring RW Bro Trevor Ridgley, who was promoted to Past Junior Grand Warden.

It was a proud moment for all, with 16 Matariki brethren in attendance — a strong show of support for our Franklin brethren.

Other presentations were also made during the evening, including two Gold Charity Medals: one to VW Bro Brian Crone, and another to Mrs. Amanda Chappel, wife of our Grand Master and fellow 476 brother. Mrs. Chappel received her medal in recognition of her outstanding role in the restructure of The Freemasons Charity (TFC).

A memorable and meaningful evening for all in attendance — a true reflection of fellowship and service within the Craft.

August was full of eventful outings, and one highlight was when the Worshipful Master and brethren of Lodge Matariki No. 476 visited The Ara Lodge No. 1 to witness the Raising of Bro Reilly Smith to the sublime degree of Master Mason.

The evening was attended by Masters and brethren from over 17 Lodges — a true reflection of the strong connections Bro Reilly has made through his regular visiting since his initiation.

Well done and congratulations, Bro Reilly!

On 5th July 2025 Lodge Matariki no. 476 installed their fourth Master in the Chair, W Bro Mouria Ngati Au, during the ceremony held at King's College led by VW Bro Paul Larsen Dist GM and his team. The WM succeeds the Immediate Past Master, W Bro Greg Fowler who had a thriving term leading the Lodge.

Renewal and beginnings are themes particularly relevant to Lodge Matariki which is named for a constellation (Pleiades) which, to many South Pacific cultures, heralds rebirth and regeneration. W Bro Mouria hails from the Cook Islands and is privileged to be the first of the Lodge's initiates to attain the rank of Installed Master.

Masters and Lodge representatives from throughout Counties-Hauraki, Auckland, Northland, and even the Waikato attended the day's events, enjoying the warm hospitality and excellent dining Lodge Matariki has come to be known for. Representing the Grand Master, RW Bro Paul Johnston JGW offered sage counsel to the WM and his brethren, emphasizing the importance of fostering and developing brotherhood even among fathers and sons. A highlight of the day, the WM invested his father Bro Richard Pokoina MM as Organist and shared a heartfelt embrace.

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet—to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields. (Moina Michael, "We Shall Keep the Faith" 1918)

We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

Poppy Day is this Friday! freemasonsnz.org and www.rsa.org.nz Please like, follow and share this post.

Anzac Poppy Day is this Friday, 11th April 2025.

You might want to help as a collector or make a donation.

Poppy Day is the RNZRSA's main fundraising activity. Donations collected on Poppy Day help us improve the health and well-being outcomes for New Zealand's veterans of all ages.

The RSA was established in 1916 with the aim of taking care of New Zealand’s veterans and their families as soldiers returned from Gallipoli. While today’s soldiers face different challenges, our support to them and their whanau continues.

In 2024, we celebrated 102 years of the Poppy Appeal – with the Poppy campaign running throughout the month of April and Poppy Day, our street collection, occurring on 19 April.

The first poppy appeal in 1922 netted 13,166 pounds – poppies were sold for one shilling each. Today's poppies are sold for a gold coin donation and we average close to a million poppies sold each year.
