πŸš— BANGERS TO BLUFF 2026 β€” THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR! πŸš—
Ten years. Ten glorious, oil-leaking, duct-tape-holding years. And what a decade it's been.
This year's Bangers to Bluff was our biggest yet, with a staggering 18 vehicles making the pilgrimage south β€” proof that either New Zealanders love a good cause, or they'll use any excuse to drive an elderly car to the bottom of the country. Probably both.
A massive thank you to NES Hire for supplying the legendary support ute β€” stocked with the essentials: water, oil, duct tape, "refreshments" πŸ₯€ (we're saying no more), and β€” our personal favourite β€” a hammer. Because sometimes engineering is just percussive maintenance. The AA were on hand for the more serious dramas, because even duct tape has its limits.
πŸ“Έ Gold Country β€” look at that main street sunshine. Some of our finest machinery was spotted here. And by "finest," we mean "most colourful."
The numbers are still being wrestled into submission by our accountants, but early word is we've smashed $100,000 πŸŽ‰ β€” which will be heading to our headline charity MS New Zealand, as well as Rotary Youth and Community programmes including RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards β€” still one of the most hotly contested tickets in town), MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly β€” where our young leaders put world leaders to shame), and other vital causes.
πŸ“Έ Lake Matheson at dawn β€” this is what waits for you at the end of a long day on the road. Worth every rattle and every prayer.
Planning is already underway for Bangers to Bluff 2027, and we're told the route will include the Forgotten Highway, the breathtaking Mackenzie Country, and the mighty Dansey's Pass. Spectacular scenery. Questionable roads. Perfect.
πŸ“Έ The crew β€” 40-odd (and we do mean odd) legends gathered for the obligatory group photo. Hats off, hands in the air, flags flying. This is what community looks like.
Thank you to every driver, supporter, donor, mechanic, and anyone who cheered from the side of the road. See you in 2027 β€” start saving your spare parts now! πŸ”§

Well, we did it AGAIN. πŸŽ‰β›³

140+ golfers descended on Pakuranga Golf Club for the 28th Annual Ambrose Golf Tournament β€” and once again, the course survived. (Barely. We're looking at you, Hole 9.)

From the moment our incredible volunteers opened registration at sparrow's chirp, to the last bidder at the silent auction, to the final (appropriately concise) speech of the evening β€” it was an absolutely cracking day. Whether you came for the golf, the prizes, the legendary buffet, or just to beat your boss in a socially acceptable setting, THANK YOU for being part of it.

Out on the course, drives were launched, balls were lost, and dreams were chased across 18 beautiful holes. The Ambrose format means your team's BEST ball counts β€” so everyone got to be a hero at least once. And for our Putting Competition winner... yes, that really was a bottle of Bombay Sapphire handed over on the green. Some people play for the love of the game. Others play for the gin. We fully support both.
Every dollar raised goes to causes that matter right here in our community β€” our headline charity The Rising Foundation, St Anne's Anglican Foodbank, and the Rotary Young Leaders Award programme. You swung hard and gave generously, and that means the world.
A massive shout out to our tireless Rotary volunteers β€” the real MVPs β€” who arrive early, stay late, wrangle scorecards, prizes, and people, and still somehow smile through all of it. Twenty-eight years of this event and counting.

Well, we did it AGAIN. πŸŽ‰β›³

140+ golfers descended on Pakuranga Golf Club for the 28th Annual Ambrose Golf Tournament β€” and once again, the course survived. (Barely. We're looking at you, Hole 9.)

Whether you came for the golf, the prizes, the legendary buffet, or just to beat your boss in a socially acceptable setting β€” THANK YOU for making this day absolutely unforgettable.

Every dollar raised goes to causes that matter right here in our community β€” led by our headline charity The Rising Foundation, plus St Anne's Anglican Foodbank and the Rotary Young Leaders Award programme. You all smacked it long and gave generously. That's a win in our books. πŸ†

Registration is OPEN. The coffee is hot. The excuses are already flowing. β˜•πŸ˜‚

Our incredible Rotary volunteers were at the desk from sparrow's chirp β€” handing out scorecards, goodie bags, and the occasional pep talk to those who clearly hadn't swung a club since last year's tournament. No judgement. Okay, a little judgement.

Shout out to our check-in legends who kept 140+ golfers moving with a smile β€” you're the MVPs before anyone hits Hole 1! πŸ™Œ

THEY'RE OFF! πŸŒοΈπŸ’¨

Drives were launched. Balls were lost. Dreams were chased across 18 beautiful holes at Pakuranga Golf Club.

From booming tee shots to delicate putts (and everything in between), today's field gave us a full masterclass in the Ambrose format β€” where your team's BEST ball counts. Which means everyone's a hero at least once. Probably.

Sponsor banners were flying, The Rising Foundation and Bangers to Bluff flags waved proudly at the tee β€” a reminder of why we're all out here.

NOW THAT'S what we call a nearest-to-the-pin prize. πŸ’ŽπŸΈ

Our on-course prize-giving was a highlight of the day β€” and yes, that IS a bottle of Bombay Sapphire being handed over on the Practice Putting Gree: A great return $5 for 2 balls. Some people play for the love of the game. Others play for the gin. We fully support both motivations.

Huge smiles all round as our Rotary volunteers delivered the goods out on the fairway β€” because why wait for the clubhouse when you can celebrate RIGHT where it happened?

Congratulations to all our prize winners today β€” from longest drive to closest to the pin, you all earned it!
And not just a lonely Banger hiding on the course but FREE Bangers provided by Marie. Thanks Marie..onions and mustard too...YUM
Dinner, silent auction & evening prize-giving (post with buffet & prize table photos)

And then there was FOOD. πŸ—πŸžπŸ˜

After 18 holes of heroic effort, our hungry champions (and, let's be honest, hungry also-rans) descended on the post-round buffet like they hadn't eaten in a week. The spread was absolutely magnificent β€” and it disappeared at a pace that would make any caddie nervous.

While plates were loaded, the silent auction table was doing serious business β€” packed with incredible prizes generously donated by our sponsors. Every bid went straight toward The Rising Foundation, St Anne's Anglican Foodbank, and the Rotary Young Leaders Award programme. Turns out golfers are very generous when they're full of food and competitive spirit. πŸ™

And of course β€” the evening prize-giving! Our beloved Rotary members took the stage to celebrate the day's champions. The room was full, the laughs were loud, and the speeches were... appropriately concise. (You're welcome.)

These are the REAL winners.

Meet the Half Moon Bay Rotary volunteers β€” the engine room behind 28 years of this event. They arrive early, stay late, count scorecards, wrangle prizes, MC the evening, and somehow still smile through all of it. Legends, the lot of them.

THANK YOU to every single volunteer, sponsor, and helper who made the 28th Annual Ambrose Golf Tournament a roaring success for The Rising Foundation, All Saints Anglican Foodbank, and the Rotary Young Leaders Award programme. Your community thanks you.

πŸ—“οΈ MARCH MADNESS: Rotary Edition!
If you see a Half Moon Bay Rotarian napping in their car this month... no you didn’t. 🀫 πŸ’€

March is looking busier than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs and we’re buckled in for the ride! Here’s the "Great March Survival Guide" for our Club

πŸš— Sunday, March 1st: Brit and Euro Car Show
We’ll be out in our glamorous high-vis vests, marshalling some of the world’s most beautiful cars. Come for the vintage Jaguars and Aston Martins. And remember what you got up to in your Ford Prefects/Morris Minors and Austin A30's !!

β›³ Monday, March 9th: 28th Annual Ambrose Golf Tournament
It’s our 28th year! By now, you’d think we’d be pros, but let's be honestβ€”it’s mostly "Routes Less Travelled" but on a fairway. It’s all for a great cause, so if you see us in the bunkers, we’re just... inspecting the sand quality.

🏎️ Monday, March 16th: The 10th Anniversary of Bangers to Bluff!
The big one! We’re heading off for 13 days of wandering down the "Roads Less Travelled" via the East Cape ( whew) and Molesworth Station all the way to Bluff. We’ve got 10 years of experience in praying that old engines don't give up the ghost before the South Island. Wish us luck (and mechanical miracles)!

THE BRAINS TRUST IS ON THE CASE!
Pictured here is the Bangers to Bluff committee doing what committees do best β€” drinking coffee, waving maps around, and looking like they know exactly what they're doing. (At least one of them clearly does. Rod has obviously already given up and is just enjoying the flat white.)
The agenda today? Our beloved Highway 35 around the stunning East Cape β€” our preferred route and one of the most spectacular drives in New Zealand β€” is under serious threat from slips and road closures, and we need a Plan B. Or possibly a Plan C. Maybe even a Plan D, judging by how long this meeting went.
Here's the thing though β€” the communities along the East Cape are doing it incredibly tough right now. Multiple road closures have hammered local businesses and the people who depend on travellers passing through. Whether we make it around SH35 or not, we want to shine a light on that region and encourage everyone to support those businesses whenever the roads allow. They need our support.
Watch this space as our very capable (and well-caffeinated) committee works through the options. Whatever route we take, it's going to be one heck of an adventure!

Three of our Rotarians visited Finlayson Park School to present Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries to the students. It was a joy to see the excitement and pride on the children’s faces as they received their very own books β€” a gift to encourage learning, reading, and curiosity.

A big thank you to Principal Sumithra Naidoo and the wonderful staff for welcoming us so warmly. These dictionaries are part of Rotary’s ongoing effort to support literacy and education in our local community.

Well done to all the students β€” may your new dictionaries open up a world of words and knowledge!

We were delighted to welcome Lole Turner as our latest member.
In inducting Lole, President Steve noted that she epitomised the Rotary 4 Way Test through her work as the Foodbank co-ordinator at All Saints Church. In response, Lole expressed gratitude for her acceptance into the Club and gave a brief background as to her upbringing in Tonga where her 7’2” father taught her that β€œactions speak louder than words”. Lole has two sons and a husband who is always supportive even though Lole said, β€˜She is always right!’
