Week 11: 10 Leadership Essential Qualities & 12 leadership Principles.

This week the Albert-Eden & Puketapapa Ethnic youth base continued exploring the leadership series and building effective leaders. Young leaders started exploring 10 leadership essentials and 12 leadership principles to be an effective leader.

We listed 5 essentials of leadership that leaders need:
1. Designed to Lead
2. Discover who you are
3. Your vision
4. Highlight your inspiration and talk about it
5. Commit to Principles and Values

Started with two principles of the 12 principles needed for effective leadership:
1. Purpose: your sense of destiny
2. Vision : Perception of a better future

Young leaders learned also that from an ethnic perspective leadership starts at home. Forged within the home setting and family structure. Leadership is about serving and providing solution to issues with a focus on change.

“If you call yourself a leader and not changing anything you are simply a manager”

Join us next week if you are in Alberta-Eden and Puketapapa for a session on *vocational Education* .

LEADERSHIP: Week 10- PRINCIPLES & GUEST SPEAKER.

Our leadership series continues this, week we started exploring PRINCIPLES. How important are principles in leadership. This topic explores 12 principles to become an effective leader.

Today we learn the different principles that help govern our young leaders lives. Respect, Honesty, love, humanity, humility etc…..

In addition, we had the privilege to hear from our guest speaker Kevin from the Ethnic Liaison Police team. Kevin shared his inspiring story becoming a New Zealand Police officer.
This story resonated with our young leaders from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Kevin had barriers when he arrived in New Zealand to study. Becoming a police officer was his childhood dream in china.

When he had the opportunity to apply he could not speak well English, did not know how to swim. Which are essential to pass the NZ police test. His mother did not believe he could succeed because of Kevin’s existing barriers at the time.

However, Kevin took active steps to change and break the barriers and improve. He took one swimming lesson 🏊‍♀️ and after that he applied to become a lifeguard at the pool where he took the class. This enabled him to improve his swimming abilities.

16 years ago Kevin successfully passed the test and became a New Zealand police officer 🇳🇿

Kevin is a true inspiration for many and such inspiring story needs to be shared with young people.
In his own words” if you want to be a leader you have to be ready to lead your self. Follow your dream and DON’T GIVE UP”

Kevin’s story is a true testament that “YOU CAN BECOME WHOEVER YOU WANT TO BE AND BREAK THE SOCIAL BARRIERS”

To all young people you can lead and be like Kevin.

More inspiring stories on his work as police officer and experience coming. Please share and support.

Youth 2025, Week 3: Politics

Today we had the 3rd session of the year centred on politics. We discussed the importance of politics and youth engagement.

We were honoured by our first guest speaker of the year Hon.Phil Twyford MP for Te Atatu, former Minister of Immigration, Housing and Nuclear Disarmament.
Phil highlighted the meaning of politics in New Zealand and importance of local government politics in our daily lives.

Local elections are in Sept–Oct.
We’re embarking a 3-month project to involve young people from refugee backgrounds in voting.

Why vote?
• Local councils affect daily life: transport, housing, water, parks.
• If you don’t vote, others will — and they may not share your needs.
• Many people worldwide fight for the right to vote — we have it, let’s use it.

How it works:
• Postal voting: forms are sent to your home, you fill them out and post them back.

This youth base provides the following:
- build confidence and skills like:
- Teamwork
- Communication.
- Public Speaking
- Personal Development
- Health and wellbeing
- Spiritual Growth
- Jobs and Carrer Opportunities
- Training
- Networking

He also shared about the youth project. We were truly blessed to have Phil as a speaker to encourage and inspire the youth today.

Personal Development: Time” On time, on Tune” Mastering the power of Punctuality.

Today we entered the personal development program with the first topic on Time. Understanding time and mastering time and the power of being on time.

Young leaders discussions were followed by active role plays and exercises that highlighted the importance of being on time. Resulted in excellent leadership skills and creativity.

The young leaders produced something very special. Stay tuned to see what they came up with.

Being on time is a challenge for young leaders, We accepted the challenge to be on time this week and at the next youth meeting.

We look forward to our next meeting, we have a special guest speaker coming to empower and uplift.
