Easy beats has been improved further for this term. With new multitrack recording jamming table we will be producing even groovier beats! All hosted in a space where light and color are inspiring everyone that steps inside the room.

A young person arrived in Auckland from Korea with his whānau for a short stay.

His mum reached out before they arrived. She was trying to find somewhere her son could go during the day. Somewhere he could try new things and feel part of something.
ㅤ
His brother and sister would be at school while they were here. He wanted that too.
ㅤ
At Makatoa, our Aspirations service in Onehunga, we were able to make space for that.
ㅤ
Music. Screen printing. Gardening. Being around people his age.
ㅤ
The first time he stepped into a music session, he stayed on the edge. Watching everything. The following week, he came back. Sat down. Started making his own beats.
ㅤ
Language could have been a barrier. It wasn’t. We had the right people there. The rest worked itself out.
ㅤ
Over the next few weeks, you could see the shift.
ㅤ
Small things.
ㅤ
Staying longer. Getting involved. Finding his way into it.
ㅤ
He left with a custom tee he designed and made himself. A new interest in electronic music. And something harder to name, but easy to see.
ㅤ
For his mum, it meant he didn’t have to miss out. He had something of his own. Something built for him.
ㅤ
For us, it was a reminder of what’s possible when you start from the person, not the system. 💙🎶🎧

Snow Reindeer didn’t just appear, it was built (snow) brick by brick❄️

Back in December 2025, SRD began through our Easy Beats programme with Rueben and Leon alongside facilitators Ignacio “Nacho” and VK, starting with a simple idea, create a band, an EP and a story to go with it.

In just a few sessions, SRD had a name, a logo and its first tracks taking shape 🎛️ (and merchandise!)

Since then, the group has grown, with more participants joining the journey and Jackson coming on board as a facilitator. The studio’s stayed busy ever since, with beats being built, ideas looping, layering and sampling, sounds getting chopped, stretched and fine-tuned, and the SRD sound continuing to evolve.

One of our recent releases was featured on George FM on DJ Grant Marshall 's Saturday morning show, a huge milestone for the whole band, Media Lab and of course Spectrum Care 📻

This video captures one of the very first SRD tracks, raw, experimental and full of the energy that started it all. Because after all, as much as we always encourage our participants to celebrate their wins, we also want to encourage our participants to remember what started it all.

The year is almost finished but we still keep pumping catchy beats at Easy beats studio 🥁 🎹
Yesterday came for a piano lesson and he learned a song he has been trying to play for a while... But the real magic started happening when we set up an arpeggiator on the MPC in sync with the beats of the JDxi.
Jordan was on point with the rhythm, playing a groovy melody based on pure intuition and flow.

After we finish the session we reflected on how good it felt to create music even without music theory knowledge.

What matters the most is our passion for what we do and the energy we feel every time we press a key (or a button)
