Bit of a shift in direction for Bethells Board Riders this season.

We’re moving away from being focused on teaching people to surf, and more towards just getting out there, catching waves, and having a good time together. It’s all about building a fun, cruisy crew where anyone can jump in — whether you’re a seasoned surfer or still figuring it out.

We’ll also be opening up the page so it’s easier to connect. If you’re heading out for a surf and keen for some company, throw up a post and see who’s around. The Board Riders crew will also chuck up updates when the conditions are looking good to help get a few sessions happening.

Simple as that — more surfing, more connection, more good times 🤙

Good news & bad news team.

Bad news : no surf sesh this weekend - strong SW onshores for 3 days straight 😭

Good news : Māori Bay Grom Squad have a little surf comp next Sat 14th at Muriwai Beach for year 8s and below. Please put in the comments if you’re interested. Over & out.

Hi team, we're all taking a session break due to the holidays. Have a wee mid range forecast for you for our local beach. There are pockets of surfing opportunities, just got to keep a tight eye on the forecast pages*.
Sunday - (today) high tide is at 4.15pm today and with gentle winds, today looks promising.
Mon-Tuesday - the swell drops but the NE winds pick up massively, look for sheltered spots from the wind.
Wednesday the swell increases but the winds NE stick around
Thursday - swell drops again and the winds swing NW and the swell period drops to around 8. Ain't gonna be pretty.
Friday - Swell still dropping, small swell period but the winds settle down and are SE. Could be okay.
Sat-Sunday - the swell period starts moving up, the winds are easterlies/Northeasterlies and gentle, so look good ;)

Get out there as its a bit all over the place, but make the most of the little opportunities that pop up. Keep frothing!

* Forecasts change all the time and vary depending on site. So always keep an eye on 1 or 2 forecasts when looking at going for a sesh.

You might have guessed that we won’t be running again this weekend. The weather and surf gods have been pretty tough on us this year and won’t let up over the remaining weekends of this year.

As the sun sets on our final days of 2025, we want to acknowledge all the participants and supporters of our little community group. We’re run entirely by volunteers who give up their time to share the joy of surfing with young and old alike. Watching the progression and confidence grow in the newbies has been bloody amazing.

We’re always keen to welcome more people — no matter your level — because surfing in a group is far more fun than going it alone.

A special shoutout to Bethells beach cafe - official each who helped us host a movie night around this time last year. We’re hoping to do another one in the new year!

Finally, if the surf isn’t happening and you’re still heading in the water please be water safe. Remember to swim between the flags while lifeguards are on patrol, 11am-7pm or if after hours identify all the hazards before going in. If in doubt, stay out Bethells Beach Surf Life Saving Patrol.

We finally have the right conditions for a sesh!
We've chosen Sunday late arvo to slay. High tide is 6.20pm so we're meeting at 5pm at the cafe for sign-up, vests and a brisk walk down to the beach. Please confirm attendance on the Sportsmember App by 9pm Saturday. We would also like to welcome back coach Greg from injury, its been so long hopefully he won't need us pushing him on the waves ;) We missed you Greg!

Hi team, we won’t be running this weekend unfortunately, with the busy season upon us, we can’t get the crew together to do an official sesh. So it’s free surf sesh this weekend. HT is 11.05 Sat and Noon on Sunday so the incoming tide is always best. Get out there and have some waves for us!

Hi team, conditions are looking good for a session this weekend finally! SATURDAY!

High tide is at 5pm on Saturday so lets meet at the cafe at 3.30pm to rash up, admin and then hit the walk to the beach. The water is a balmy 20º so dust off your spring suits as the water is 3.4º warmer than normal so you certainly won't get cold! Please confirm your attendance by 9pm Friday on Sportsmember so we can plan our helpers/coaches. Yay, we're finally running!

Hey team, unfortunately we won’t be running this weekend. We don’t have enough volunteers to help us run a smooth and safe session.

Surf is looking fun this weekend so definitely get out there and have a paddle 2 hrs before high tide on Saturday and Sunday. If yourself or someone you know is keen to help out our little club get in touch with us.

Sorry guys, its bad news again, with the swell increasing over Saturday and with combined strong onshore its a no go. Sunday the wind dies down but the swell is still increasing so combined with a late HT we unfortunately won’t be running this weekend. We’re all disappointed, it’s not just you 😩

Hey everyone, we’re gonna run tomorrow morning at 10.30am.

So please meet at the cafe for check in and then we’ll head to the water. We have had a glorious week of small swells and very gentle wind and by crikey didnt we need it! Well done to everyone who got out to enjoy it, if you missed out, heres your chance, with tomorrow being the better of the two days this weekend. Please check in by 8am tomorrow morning. Yeowh
