In association with Urban Ark we have two planting days this year. They will both be good days, as usual.

The first is FRIDAY 10 July (Matariki Day off) at The Avenue Reserve in The Avenue, Lynfield. This is a small fairly open area which will be enhanced with native plantings and tracks.

Last week, Urban Ark's education team, alongside Friends of Wairaki Stream of Wairaki Stream, attended the Green Jam at Lynfield College, an opportunity for school-aged sustainability leaders across Auckland to come together and attend a series of workshops on conservation and sustainability.

Friends of Wairaki Stream gave an interesting talk on how to spot the difference between native and pest plants in your backyard. And we at Urban Ark ran a workshop on Aotearoa's unique ecology and how pest trapping is the best way to ensure our native species have the best chance of success. The workshop included introducing them to our monitoring tools, such as tracking tunnels, wax tags, and how to set up rat traps in their backyard.

This workshop is in conjunction with our education programme, which we run with students in years 5-10. Tailored to your school's local environment and STEM curriculum, the programme is designed to equip kids with the skills to understand and appreciate the diverse nature in their backyard.

If you are interested in being a part of this programme, check out the education page on our website, or contact [email protected]

A reminder, our Seaweek Day is coming up, Saturday 7 Feb, an early time of 8.45am at Lynfield Cove, down the bottom of Gilletta Ave. The area has been checked out, please wear gumboots or old closed in shoes as it is muddy in places.
We will be picking up rubbish, exploring (including our cave) and learning about the birds and foreshore. The other day there were 5 kotare/kingfisher and one of them dived and had a catch! Couldn't believe it.
And as usual there will be pizzas so plenty of reasons to be there if you can. Our session will end around 12 midday.
