Exploring, Balancing & Growing Together 🌿

This morning we extended our walk to the elephant house where the tamariki discovered new equipment that sparked excitement and curiosity. They challenged themselves by balancing on planks and ropes, supporting and encouraging each other along the way.

A lovely experience that built confidence, coordination, teamwork, and a strong sense of belonging. 🌟

✨ A wonderful morning of learning, exploration, and outdoor adventure! 💕🌱🌈

🌱💚 Today we revisited the garden outside the community house that our children had helped plant. Our tamariki were excited to check whether the seeds they had planted had begun to grow, showing curiosity, responsibility, and a growing connection with nature. 🌼🌿

🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️💚 Later, we enjoyed a short play at our beloved Shepherds Park playground. Our tamariki had opportunities to practice and strengthen their gross motor skills through active play, climbing, balancing, running, and exploring the environment with confidence. 🌳☀️

🌱Planting Seeds of Connection 🌱

Today, our tamariki had a lovely opportunity to connect with our wider community. Our neighbours at the community house recently added some planter boxes out the front and kindly invited us to help plant vegetables.

We were also fortunate to have a parent from the Y ELC Birkdale Centre join us, supporting our tamariki throughout the experience and generously sharing their time and knowledge.

Some tamariki eagerly joined in, getting their hands into the soil and exploring the planting process, while others chose to observe from a distance, taking it all in at their own pace.

This experience supported children’s sense of belonging as they engaged with people and places in our community. It was wonderful to see their curiosity, confidence, and willingness to participate develop in a meaningful, real-life context.

💚 We look forward to revisiting the garden and watching our plants—and connections—grow.

💗Pink Shirt Day at the Y ELC Beach Haven 💗

Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Today, our tamariki and kaiako proudly came dressed in pink to show their support for Pink Shirt Day. Together, we stand against bullying and celebrate kindness, inclusion, and respect.

It was wonderful to see our community come together to spread the message that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and accepted. Through meaningful conversations and shared experiences, our tamariki are learning the importance of empathy, friendship, and speaking up for one another.

Let’s continue to stand strong, be kind, and create a world where everyone belongs 💗

This week is New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week, and it also marks 20 years of NZSL being recognised as an official language of Aotearoa. 🤟

At the Y ELC Beach Haven, we’re proud to incorporate NZSL into our everyday curriculum. Our kaiako use signs during group times, play, and daily routines — including meal times — where tamariki learn simple signs that support communication, confidence, and independence.

We also enjoy Māori colour, weather, and number songs, combining te reo Māori with NZSL to help children connect language, movement, and meaning in a fun and engaging way.

We’re excited to celebrate this special week with our tamariki and continue growing our shared NZSL learning as a community. 💛

This week we reflected on ANZAC Day in ways that felt meaningful and respectful for children 🌺

ANZAC Day gave us a valuable opportunity to pause and reflect as a learning community. Through stories, waiata, conversation, and hands-on poppy making, children explored the idea of remembrance with a focus on kindness, caring for others, and choosing peaceful ways of being.

These shared moments supported children to express ideas, connect with symbols of remembrance, and strengthen relationships—learning that peace looks like being kind to friends, working together, and showing care for one another.

By honouring the past, we also made visible the values embedded in our everyday practice: aroha, respect, togetherness, and choosing peace 🌺

At Y ELC Beach Haven, we have our own special farewell ritual to honour our tamariki as they move on to the next stage of their learning journey.

Today, we were privileged to celebrate Krystal’s farewell ritual. This meaningful goodbye ceremony is a time when we invite whānau to join us as we place a korowai on the child and share their learning folder, filled with photos and stories from when they first began with us.

We also share our special haka, followed by hugs, high-fives, or a wave goodbye, making this a heartfelt and memorable celebration for everyone involved.

Krystal, we are so proud of all that you have achieved and the wonderful person you are becoming. We wish you all the very best as you begin your exciting journey into primary school. You will always be a treasured part of our Y ELC Beach Haven whānau. ❤️
