💜 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make the Whau Seniors Signature Event such a wonderful success on Monday.

It was wonderful to see such a strong turnout of older people from many different cultures and communities coming together at the New Lynn Community Centre for a day of connection, entertainment, learning, and celebration.

The cultural performances were a particular highlight, showcasing the rich diversity of the Whau community and bringing energy, colour, and joy to the event.

We would like to thank the Whau Local Board for its support, and our event partners Sport Hub Community Trust, DishNZ and Whau Ethnic Collective for helping bring this special day to life. We are also incredibly grateful to our staff and volunteers whose hard work and dedication helped create such a welcoming and inclusive event.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who attended. It was a pleasure to see people making new connections, catching up with friends, learning about local services, and celebrating the strength and diversity of our community.

Together, we continue to build a community where older people feel connected, valued, and supported.

📸 We'll be sharing more photos from the day once the official event photographs are available, so keep an eye on our page.

Age Concern Auckland was pleased to attend the Showcasing New Technologies for Healthy Ageing event at the University of Auckland’s Newmarket campus.

The event brought together researchers, students, industry, and community organisations to explore innovative technologies and research designed to support older people, including people living with dementia.

Age Concern Auckland’s Lily Lin, Ethnic Communities Support Coordinator, attended alongside our Communications Manager, Paula Egginton. We enjoyed seeing a wide range of projects focused on healthy ageing, digital inclusion, wellbeing, rehabilitation, and everyday support for older adults.

The event featured presentations from Professor Ngaire Kerse, Co-Director of the Centre for Co-Created Ageing Research, and Melanie Stowell, PhD Candidate in the School of Population Health. Melanie’s research highlighted how digital exclusion can affect wellbeing, healthcare access, confidence, and social connection for older people in later life.

It was encouraging to see so much thoughtful work focused on helping older people remain connected, independent, and supported within their communities.

Thank you to the University of Auckland and the Centre for Co-Created Ageing Research for hosting such an informative and inspiring event.

The rising cost of living is putting pressure on many families across Aotearoa — and sadly, older people are increasingly being caught in the middle.

Over the weekend, our CEO Kevin Lamb spoke with RNZ about the growing rise in elder financial abuse that Age Concern Auckland is seeing in our communities. In some cases, older people are being pressured for money, having savings misused, or feeling unable to say no to family members facing financial hardship.

Financial abuse can happen quietly and often goes unreported because older people may fear conflict, shame, or damaging family relationships. But it is never acceptable.

At Age Concern Auckland, we want older people to know they deserve to feel safe, respected, and in control of their own finances and decisions.

If you are worried about yourself or someone you know, support is available. Speaking up early can make a real difference.

Today Sir David Attenborough turns 100 — and what a remarkable reminder he is of the value older people bring to our world.

For generations of New Zealanders, his voice has helped us see the beauty of our own backyard differently too — from native forests and coastlines to the unique wildlife that makes Aotearoa special. His work has inspired curiosity, conservation, learning, and care across all ages. 🌿

At 100, Sir David continues to speak with wisdom, purpose, and urgency about protecting the natural world for future generations. In a society that too often focuses only on youth, he stands as a powerful example that older age can still be a time of influence, contribution, creativity, and leadership.

Positive ageing is not about “staying young.” It’s about continuing to share knowledge, experience, perspective, and passion — qualities older people in our communities bring every day.

Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough. Thank you for helping generations of people, including many here in New Zealand, feel more connected to the world around us. 💚
