Wake Up Communicate Toastmasters

Wake Up Communicate Toastmasters Develop your leadership and communication skills confidently in any situation at Wake Up Communicate! Meetings start at 7am and conclude at 8:30am.

The group meets every fortnight on Thursday mornings at Te Atatu South Community Centre. Visitors are welcome to get in touch and join a few sessions before deciding if Toastmasters is right for you. They typically have these common elements:

• a warm welcome
• plenty of encouragement for those who speak
• a toastmaster with a written agenda to run the meeting
• two to three speeches typically of

5 - 7 minutes duration
• Impromptu speeches (Table Topics) typically of 1 - 2 minutes
• Evaluation of each speech to provide learning through effective feedback
• a timer to keep us on track so we finish on schedule
• a tea break where members and guests have opportunity to socialise

Instead of one speaker answering a question alone, we paired members up for a CONVERSATION-style challenge, but with a twist… One person had to deliver difficult news 😬The other had to respond - in real time, without preparation!

The result?
💬 Realistic conversations
🎭 Strong emotions and reactions
🧠 Quick thinking under pressure
🤝 Active listening in action
🔥 And some surprisingly powerful storytelling moments

At Toastmasters, we practise those moments so we’re better prepared when they happen outside the room.

Come join us for a session next week. Guests are always welcome — no preparation needed, just curiosity.

Been quietly watching our posts for a while? Maybe you’ve thought:
“I should join one day…”
“I need to improve my confidence…”
“I’m just not ready yet.”

Here’s the thing, nobody starts confident.

At Wake Up Communicate Toastmasters, we’re a friendly group of everyday people learning to speak better, lead better, and connect better.

No pressure. No perfection required. You can even just visit first and observe. Message us or visit as a guest.

We're meeting this coming Thursday:

At our recent Wake Up Communicate Toastmasters session, our table topics master, Shakir, added a twist to one of everyone’s favourite (and most nerve-wracking 😄) segments — Table Topics.

Instead of picking questions the usual way, we SPIN A WHEEL 🎡

Whatever it landed on became the impromptu speaking topic. No time to overthink. No chance to prepare. Just pure, on-the-spot thinking! That’s the beauty of Toastmasters, you never know what you’ll be asked, but you always walk away stronger than when you arrived.

If you want to:
✨ Think faster on your feet
✨ Speak more confidently under pressure
✨ Get comfortable with the unexpected
✨ Have fun while improving communication skills

Come try a session with us next week.

No experience needed, just show up and give it a spin 🎡

Lest We Forget | Ka Maumahara Tonu Tātou Ki a Rātou 🇦🇺

Today, as we observe ANZAC Day, the members of Wake Up Communicate Toastmasters join the rest of Aotearoa in a moment of reflection.

We honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served and those who continue to serve. We remember the soldiers who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today, and we acknowledge the enduring "Anzac spirit", defined by friendship, service, and a deep commitment to one another.

In our club, we often talk about the power of words and the importance of sharing our stories. Today, we listen to the stories of our past with gratitude and respect. It is through remembering and communicating these histories that we ensure their legacy lives on in our community.

Whether you attended a dawn service, spent time with whānau, or are simply taking a quiet moment of reflection during this long weekend, we wish you a peaceful and meaningful ANZAC Day.

Lest we forget.

As Aotearoa commemorates Waitangi weekend, we take this time to reflect on our shared history, our diverse communities, and the values that bring us together. At Wake Up Communicate Toastmasters, we learn to listen, to communicate with purpose, and to uplift each other: skills that strengthen community, just as this weekend reminds us to do.

Whether you’re spending the long weekend with whānau, exploring our beautiful country, or enjoying a well-earned rest, we wish you a safe and meaningful Waitangi Weekend.
