What's it like for a new refugee to arrive in NZ?

To mark World Refugee Day, Kadambari Raghukumar visits Auckland's Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre and interviews Qemajl Murati, Head of Refugee Quota Programmes, Immigration NZ.

What's it like for a new refugee to arrive in New Zealand, get resettled and start a new life here? This month we are marking World Refugee Day with 3-part series on stories on refugee resettlement in New Zealand.

Meet Mohsen Sakhravi who recently arrived in NZ with his young family having spent considerable time in an offshore detention centre in Papua New Guinea. Mohsen is a self-taught creative artist who's been making and selling epoxy resins products since 2017.

Mohsen is a NEST graduate, a Generite and is currently receiving business coaching in our SOAR programme. Huge thanks to our friends at The Generator for capturing Mohsen's startup journey!

On Saturday Iti Rearea Collective hosted our very first Money Mindset class with 21 former refugees and migrant entrepreneurs. This was an entirely new module that we co-funded with the Community Impact Team at Auckland council when we could see there was a need for deep learning in our community around financial safety and wellbeing. Our aim was to further educate our participants on safe borrowing practices, how to budget for personal and business expenses and the best way to w**d out those "spending leaks" that can be holding you back from achieving your savings targets.

We had great interest in the class with many participants asking when the next money session will be, which is so awesome! I'm really proud of our IRC team for being agile and pivoting with our community's needs. A big part of who we are as an organisation!
