Ashhurst Pohangina Lions Lions are ordinary men and women with hearts to make a difference in our community, galvanised by a common cause to serve and support.

Lions are ordinary men, women and young people from all walks of life who bridge religious, political, economic and social boundaries. They are united in their desire to make a difference by contributing their personal time and talents to help other people. Their motto is “We Serve”. In New Zealand 11,200 members belong to 410 clubs in seven Districts. They are part of a worldwide network of 1.3 m

illion Lions in over 200 countries or regions. They are community volunteers who roll up their sleeves to help young people, elderly, the ailing, the needy and their environment. In terms of their time on projects and money raised, it is estimated Lions contribute more than $100 million each year for charitable organisations here and in the Pacific. People who live in the community know their community’s needs and because Lions Clubs are autonomous, decisions about community projects are made at the community’s grass roots. Lions’ projects tend to be very hands on and they actively work alongside organisations that they support. They are also significant fund raisers and are very proud that every dollar they raise from the public goes to the cause. They cover the hard costs of items needed for their project, where these are not donated but have to be bought and paid for. But they do not take a percentage of the money for their own purposes. This makes them distinctly different from professional charity fundraisers.
