We often get asked “what’s the difference between you two” or “Why are there so many of you here” - So here’s a little insight into the why!
The ambulance service is made up of many different practice levels (ATPs), sometimes crews need backup from each other in order to give you the best care possible. The levels are:
First Responder/Emergency Medical Assistant - entry level, provides immediate life saving treatment such as bleeding control and oxygenation. Usually crewed with an EMT or above unless on a first response unit.
EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) - the next step. This level of qualification requires a diploma in Paramedic Science. Staff at this ATP provide inhaled, intramuscular and oral medications as well as all the other basics.
Paramedic - third step on the ladder. This ATP provides all the above as well as IV access, a myriad of other drugs and skills like cardio version. Requires a university degree.
Intensive Care Paramedic (ICP) - provide pre hospital intensive treatment to some of our most ill patients with treatments like IV Magnesium for Asthma.
Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) - provides all the above, specialising in critical care in the pre hospital setting e.g rapid sequence intubation. Requires all the above plus post grad at university.
Extended care paramedic (ECP) - Experts in community care with an extremely wide scope of practice including at home wound care, suturing and catheter troubleshooting/replacement. Also requires postgrad study.
We could go on all day but hopefully this gives you a bit of insight into why you might see so many of our green team! 🚑🚑

Thanks to the support of the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust, St John Mid Canterbury have been able to donate 6 x Sports First Aid Kits to the Ashburton College Sports department.

These kits will benefit untold number of students when away on sports exchanges, tournaments, and games.

Thanks to the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust, these lovely people were the first ones in Mid Canterbury to attend our new Caring for Kids training course.

This 3-hour course is designed to be practical and interactive, with plenty of hands-on learning. Learners leave with new knowledge and the confidence to use their skills in real-life situations when it matters most.

A huge thank you the Ashburton Rock 'n' Roll Club who raised over $2000 for St John at their fundraising event last weekend.

We are exceptionally grateful for your efforts and hope you all had a great night!

On Wednesday 26th Aug, despite the pouring rain, the Hato Hone St John Mid Canterbury community, came together to dedicate and bless a new Ambulance joining our fleet.

Ambulance 918 has been made possible through the remarkable generosity of the Mid Canterbury people, including donations, bequests and grant funding. This vehicle represents the collective support of people who share our commitment to ensuring the highest standard of emergency care remains available throughout our region.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed towards this project. In particular, we wish to acknowledge the Wilkinson Family who have played a significant part in this project.

The addition of Ambulance 918 to our team will help maintain the high standard of emergence response our community relies on, ensuring our crews can continue delivering life saving care, treatment and transport when those in our community need it most.

More than 100 supporters, volunteers, staff and guests gathered to mark this special occasion including Ziena Jalil, Deputy Chief Executive of Strategy and Operations, whose presence helped make the event even more memorable.

Special thank you to the Wilkinson Family, Advance Ashburton, Braided Rivers Trust and several anonymous donors whose generosity has helped bring this project to life.
