Plains Rotary Supports Rural Health Academic Centre
The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains was delighted to make a donation recently to the Rural Health Academic Centre at Ashburton Hospital (RHACA). This donation of $5,298.80 which included proceeds from the Car Rally held in March, enabled the purchase of a digital laryngoscope which will be used in the RHACA training facility. The digital laryngoscope is a hand-held medical tool with a tiny camera and screen. It helps medical teams to see inside a patient’s windpipe clearly, making it easier and safer to insert breathing tubes during emergencies or surgery.

RHACA is a collaboration between the University of Otago, Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, Advance Ashburton Community Foundation and the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation. Located within Ashburton Hospital, it is a physical and virtual hub for inter-professional rural health training and research. RHACA focuses on rurally relevant education, research, clinical skills and simulation, and it links a diverse academic faculty across the South Island.

Members of our Club had the pleasure of meeting with RHACA staff and experiencing the simulation suite and training centre. Using lifelike mannequins, a variety of emergency situations can be realistically simulated to provide skills training and courses such as the Rural Interprofessional Simulation Course. As complex emergency situations arise infrequently in a rural hospital like Ashburton, it is critical to the outcome of patients that the medical team is confident and competent in their professional skills. Having the opportunity to practice in the simulation suite means that skill set is maintained and patients receive the highest quality of care. Pitured are members of Plains Rotary learning about the digital laryngoscope.

Rotary Scholarship Supports Future Doctor
Members of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains were pleased to welcome Emily-Jane Elliott to a recent meeting, where she spoke about her studies and her ambition to become a doctor. Emily-Jane was accompanied by her mother and enjoyed an evening with the Club.
Emily-Jane was the recipient of a $1,000 Rotary scholarship, which will assist her with the costs of pursuing her medical studies at the University of Otago.
Now in her second year of the medical programme, Emily-Jane has a further four years of study ahead of her before completing her qualification. She spoke about her educational journey, beginning at Ashburton Allenton Primary School before progressing to Ashburton College.
During her time at Ashburton College, Emily-Jane was a school leader and achieved excellent academic results. Her hard work and dedication enabled her to gain entry to the University of Otago, where she is now working towards her goal of a career in medicine.
Members enjoyed hearing about Emily-Jane’s experiences and future aspirations and were delighted to be able to support a local student as she works towards achieving her goal of becoming a doctor. Pictured: President Steve Allen with Emily-Jane Elliott

This week we were thrilled to host Kate White from Connecting Mid Canterbury at our meeting. Kate gave an enjoyable and informative presentation about the two community initiatives run by Connecting Mid Canterbury - the Mid Canterbury TimeBank and Keep Learning Mid Canterbury.

Through the Mid Canterbury TimeBank, members of our community can connect to give and receive services. Members can access a website to advertise the skills they are willing to offer to someone who needs help, and to access the skills of others for things they might need help with. For example, you may be able to help someone to hem their trousers and someone may be able to help you to prune your roses. Everyone has skills that they can offer and it is a wonderful way to connect with people in the community that you might not otherwise meet. See the Mid Canterbury TimeBank website for further details: https://www.mctimebank.nz/

Keep Learning Mid Canterbury facilitates a myriad of educational events in our community and operates a website where these and other events happening in our community are advertised. Go to the Keep Learning website and sign up for email notifications to keep in touch with the many events coming up - https://keeplearningmc.nz/ In August alone there are 46 events listed from laser cutting classes to social quilting, from information sessions about getting the most out of your Doctor to gambling harm support, from upcycling to cooking food from Pakistan. There really is something for everyone!

Lastly, Kate shared the progress of Cycling Without Age Mid Canterbury, a local charitable initiative working to provide free, specialised trishaw bike rides for older adults and people with limited mobility. This group is actively fundraising to purchase two trishaw bikes so seniors can experience the outdoors and community connection.

Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains Welcomes New President

The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains marked the end of another successful Rotary year at its annual Changeover Meeting held last week.
The occasion saw the formal handover of leadership from outgoing President Wim Melchers to incoming President Steve Allen. After serving two consecutive years as President, Wim was thanked for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to guiding the club through a busy and productive period of service to the community.
During his term, the club continued its support of numerous local projects and community organisations while also contributing to Rotary's wider national and international initiatives. Members acknowledged Wim's steady leadership and the significant contribution he made to the continued success of the club.
Taking up the role for the 2026-27 Rotary year, President Steve Allen outlined his vision for the year ahead and introduced his team of directors who will support the club's activities and community service programmes.
Steve also shared Rotary International's theme for the coming year, "Create Lasting Impact." The theme encourages Rotarians around the world to focus on projects and initiatives that deliver meaningful and sustainable benefits for their communities and beyond.
In his address, President Steve highlighted the important role Rotary continues to play in supporting local causes, developing future leaders, and contributing to international humanitarian efforts. He expressed his enthusiasm for working alongside club members to build on the strong foundation established by previous presidents and to continue making a positive difference in the Ashburton community.
The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains has a proud history of service and community involvement, and members are looking forward to another active year of fundraising, fellowship, and projects that embody Rotary's motto of "Service Above Self."

Rotary Club Celebrates Ray King’s 50 Years of Service

The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains recently celebrated a remarkable milestone, recognising Ray King for 50 years of dedicated membership and service to Rotary and the wider community.
As part of the celebration, Rotarian Carolyn Cameron hosted a special "This Is Your Life" presentation. Fellow Rotarians and community members shared memories and stories highlighting Ray's outstanding contribution to Rotary and the Ashburton community over the past five decades.
To mark this significant achievement, Ray was then presented with a beautifully crafted commemorative clock in recognition of his half-century of commitment to the ideals of Rotary and his outstanding contribution to both the club and the community.
Ray joined the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains on 23 June 1976 and quickly became involved in club leadership and service activities. Within two years he was serving as Director of the Youth Committee, followed by a year in Club Administration before becoming Club President in 1982-83.
Over the ensuing decades, Ray has held numerous leadership and service roles within the club, including Secretary, Newsletter Editor, Sergeant, Vocational Committee Chairperson, District Governor’s Representative, and organiser of youth programmes and speech contests. His commitment to developing young people has been a consistent theme throughout his Rotary journey.
In recognition of his service, Ray was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in 1994. He later received additional recognition through Sapphire Pins, culminating in a Double Sapphire Pin in 2020, acknowledging his continued dedication to Rotary and community service over many years.
One of Ray’s most significant Rotary achievements was serving as District Governor for Rotary District 9970 during the 2002-03 Rotary year. In this role he provided leadership to Rotary clubs from the Rangitata River to the top of the South Island, including the West Coast. During this period he was heavily involved in Rotary International’s PolioPlus campaign, helping support Rotary’s global mission to eradicate polio.
Beyond Rotary, Ray has made substantial contributions to a number of community organisations. He has been involved with the Ashburton District Youth Institute since its inception, supporting fundraising initiatives and leading the annual Kick Start Leadership Course for Year 8 students. He also served for 16 years as a trustee of the Mid and South Canterbury Life Education Trust, including nine years as Chairperson, and served on the National Board of Life Education from 2009 to 2012. In recognition of his service, he was awarded Life Membership of Life Education.
Ray has also contributed his time and expertise through service on the Ashburton Restorative Justice Panel and through hosting international exchange students, helping foster understanding and goodwill between cultures.
Throughout his 50 years of Rotary membership, Ray has exemplified Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.” His dedication, leadership, and willingness to contribute wherever needed have left a lasting impact on the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, Rotary across New Zealand, and the wider Ashburton community.
The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains congratulates Ray on this extraordinary milestone and thanks him for five decades of outstanding service.
