Watch out for slippery bridges in winter, especially across the South Island as overnight temperatures approach 0ΒΊC.
Bridges get icy before the normal road around them, and they stay icier for longer than the rest of the road.
That's because bridges and overpasses cool more quickly than a normal section of road. This means itβs easier for ice to form on a bridge, and it also takes longer for ice to melt away. A bridge may be slippery even if the road either side of the bridge isnβt slippery.
Adjust your speed to suit the conditions. Slow down and avoid sudden braking when youβre approaching a bridge on days when the temperature has been at or below 0ΒΊC.
Reducing your speed will reduce the likelihood of you sliding on the bridge if the bridge is icy or otherwise slippery.
