🧡 Happy National Volunteer Week to our incredible Southern whānau! This week, we're celebrating every single one of you who shows up, rolls up your sleeves, and makes Cancer Society Southern what it is.

From the people quietly baking goods and driving patients to treatment, to those volunteering at our preloved clothing stores, CanShop Queenstown and Daffies Preloved Clothing, and everyone doing the hundred other things that keep our mahi going: you are the backbone of everything we do.

Every kilometre driven, every shift worked, every batch of baking, every smile shared with someone who really needs it, it all matters more than you know. You make sure no one in our communities faces cancer alone, and that means everything.

To every volunteer across our Southern region, from the mountains to the coast, thank you. Genuinely. We couldn't do this without you. 🌼

26% of people who receive donated blood products in New Zealand have cancer, making cancer patients the single largest group of blood recipients in Aotearoa as they go through their treatment.

And it's not just blood. Plasma can be turned into up to 11 life-saving medicines and treat up to 50 illnesses, including cancer, kidney disease, blood clots and liver failure. Demand is growing more than 10% every year, and right now, only 17,435 New Zealanders donate plasma.

Thank you to every blood, plasma and platelet donor this Blood Donor Week (and every other week!) Grab someone you love and book in together at nzblood.co.nz 🩸

You may have seen in the Courier last week that Mandy got to meet with the wonderful ladies from Ashburton County Lions.

They ran a Mother's Day raffle and this year the funds raised will be going towards supporting women with breast cancer in Ashburton.

Thank you so much for your very kind donation 💐

Thank you Daisy, from all the team at Cancer Society Mid Canterbury 👏

You are so brave and kind, chopping your hair off so it can be donated to create a wig for someone in need, and raising a massive $1,894 as well, amazing!

Woo hoo, go Mid Canterbury 👏

You helped Clive Chapman (top fundraiser) and Trevor Croy (second highest) take out the top individual fundraising awards for 2026 Scooter Safari.

What an amazing 10th Scooter Safari! We hope everyone enjoyed the coast to coast adventure as much as we loved seeing you out there. Together, you've helped raise over $371,000 - an absolutely phenomenal achievement.

A special congratulations to Clive Chapman (pictured), who is our top fundraiser with an incredible $16,082. Clive is now the owner of a brand new Tricity 300, generously donated by Yamaha Motor New Zealand.

We would also like to extend our thanks to some of the incredible groups who contributed their time, energy and resources: Vintage Car Club Canterbury, Sheffield Pies, Rapid Relief Team NZ, Kumara Racecourse, and Westland Boys Brigade. Your support means so much to us, and we truly couldn't do this without you.

Thank you all for being part of such a special milestone event - see you in 2028!

Gosh we are so grateful to have such a generous community 🫶

Today we received a donation of baking from Maddie and the Korora Group at St John Ashburton.

This group of 5–8-year-olds are working through the "Caring Badge" and part of this is a "caring for the sick topic". They chose to make some delicious truffles for us to share with our clients.

They also made us a beautiful card and I'm sure our clients will find joy from your baking 🥰

Thank you Hato Hone St John - Mid Canterbury for what you do for our community each and every day.

Hearing the words “you have cancer” is something no one ever wants to face. Yet every day, it changes lives, not only for the person diagnosed, but for their whānau, friends, and community.

Last May, Amanda Acheson received a leukemia diagnosis after a routine blood test. In an instant, life was divided into “before” and “after.” But Amanda’s journey is not only one of illness, it’s becoming one of transformation.
