Arrow River Flood Bund 💦

The AVA has been in touch with ORC who manage water ways and previously built the retaining river bund.

They had already decided that the bund gave very little protection, so felt there was no point in continuing to maintain it - coincidently the river then destroyed it last week anyway.

We’ve noted online sentiment that visual and physical access to the river is an improvement. So ORC currently have no plans to rebuild the bund. Some remedial tidy up will happen in a couple of weeks with slash and debris removed.

📻 This morning's interview with Ridgeburn developer resulted in some interesting take aways under pressure from John Campbell.

- The "20% affordable housing" claim is actually 15% (180/1200), of which only 45 are for sale

The developer behind a controversial housing project near Arrowtown is defending a revised fast-track application and says more housing is needed in the area.

🚧 MACETOWN RD CLOSED 🚧

Unsurprisingly the recent flood has caused slips and damage along the Macetown road.

Funds collected from the gate permit by the ACT will be used for repairs in due course. For now the road and online permit system is closed until further notice. (Archive picture)

$27 million in "safety upgrades" represents quite an admission of the impact this development will have on just one rural intersection. Where else might we feel the effects if this goes ahead?

Make no mistake, "Ridgeburn" will be marketed highlighting it's proximity to Arrowtown. Just 5km from our doorstep.

Our current population is around 3000, on a busy day a further 3000 visitors huddle into our car parks and on Buckingham Street. What would a further 3000 nearby residents mean for the village's future?

Further admissions that this development, outside the spatial plan, is in the wrong place include the need for it's own private bus service, it's own supermarket, wastewater treatment and special subsidised rental and first-time buyer schemes, because even the developer knows that more houses doesn't actually mean cheaper houses for young people or families to buy.

All this is presented on the premise that "congestion, housing shortages and infrastructure pressure aren't new issues" whilst also stating that "these pressures are not going to disappear if Ridgeburn doesn't proceed", one might respond - exactly!

Please make sure you are aware of this fast track proposal, the serious impacts it will have on Arrowtown and the wider district.

Queenstown Smart Growth Initiative are working hard to respond, outlining why this is the wrong development, in the wrong place. They need your help and donations.
