Purna began work on this community garden in his home village of Tanchok in 2012. We have planted tea and installed a beehive - the local honey is excellent.

Garden in the Himalayas is a community garden established in January 2012 and a beautiful, inspiring project in the heart of Nepal that preserves native plants, inspires local communities and protects the natural habitat It is a long-term project with the aim of conserving and cultivating native plants and improving the diet of the villagers. Child malnutrition is, sadly, still a problem in upland Nepal; rather than one-off food aid, a more nutritious and varied diet of locally grown produce will really make a difference. The Garden aims to work with local schools to
make this a sustainable and educational venture. The target is to help both villagers and the environment by encouraging sound practices of inter-cropping and organic cultivation while conserving native plants that are uniquely adapted to the mountain conditions. The ground has been cleared and the first vegetables, flowers and medicinal herbs have been planted. There is still a great deal of work to be done and we’d like to invite volunteers to spend a few days helping out in Tanchok at any time of the year. Tanchok is a beautiful village with friendly people located off the mass tourist trail at an altitude of 1700m, an hour and a half from the historic city of Pokhara. It has glorious views of the Annapurna range and there are many trekking possibilities in the area. Environmentalists, gardeners, cultivators and handymen are particularly welcome - but anyone can lend a hand in different ways and experience everyday life in the village -something you will never get from a tourist brochure. The summer monsoon has brought the garden to life — lush, green, fresh and full of energy. 💚🌱

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all our individual donors and supporters who have helped us keep the garden alive and growing. Your kindness and generosity mean so much to us.

A very special thank you to the Kadoorie Charity Foundation for their generous donation of HKD 50,000, helping us take the garden into its next phase. 🙏💚

As a first step, we have invested in this much-needed tool to help keep the grounds tidy and well cared for. It may be a simple tool, but it makes a big difference in looking after our beautiful garden. 🌿

CALLING ALL PLANT LOVERS, BOTANISTS, GARDENERS, HERBALISTS, AND MOUNTAIN WANDERERS.
This August, we journey deep into the Dhaulagiri region of western Nepal for an 18–20 day Plant Exploring Expedition across one of the Himalaya’s richest montane ecosystems.
From lush valleys and forested river systems to alpine meadows and high Himalayan plateaus, we will study plants in their native habitat while collecting seeds, cuttings, and living specimens for Garden in the Himalayas. (Subject to the permit given, Plants and seeds will be collected from between 1200 mtrs and 3000 mtrs. only)

This expedition offers a rare opportunity to observe Himalayan flora across dramatic altitude ranges while travelling through remote villages and ancient trekking routes.

Highlights include:
• ethnobotanical exploration
• seed collecting and plant documentation
• medicinal and alpine flora
• wild Himalayan landscapes
• remote cultural encounters
• spectacular mountain panoramas

Limited spaces available.
Expedition departs from Pokhara between 14th and 16th August.

In the emerald heart of East Rukum, Nepal, the monsoon became my guide.

I wandered through valleys where wildflowers bloomed like scattered prayers, beside rivers that carried the songs of the mountains, and beneath waterfalls that washed away the noise of the world.

Every path revealed a hidden treasure, every forest whispered the names of ancient plants, and every encounter—with kind-hearted people, gentle animals, and the living landscape—became part of a story far older than myself.

This was more than an expedition. It was a pilgrimage of discovery, wonder, and gratitude.

August 2025 will forever remain etched in my heart—a season of rain, wild beauty, and unforgettable memories.
