Mental health services: Our counselling services provide a vital life line for many people in the community who have experienced mental health troubles or trauma. Provisions around the country are slowly increasing but still not at the rate needed.

Some of our clients are travelling 2-3 hours on the local bus just to attend their sessions as there are no closer options available. But they still make the effort because they can see the difference these meetings are making for them.

Did you know that one of counsellor Bina’s favourite tools to use in her practice is simple beads and buttons?

Bina explained that beads and buttons can be incredibly versatile to support clients in a multitude of activities and are helpful with younger and older clients.

They can be great at bringing easily distracted children into the space with focused activities around sorting, discussing and threading. A great way to start a session!

Bina finds them especially useful as icebreakers for shyer clients or clients that are not used to using creative tools without it being a directive task. Through exploring the options of playing with these items, children and young people can start to relax and become more open in the session.

What do you think you’d do if you were presented with some beads or buttons?

HEALTHY PARENTING

Because of poverty, illiteracy and neglect, many children have poor hygiene and illnesses. Nepal House provides medical care, healthy meals and education about hygiene to children and their parents free of charge. Nepal is riddled by poverty and high rates of abuse and neglect. Addictions are also a major issue.

The girls who attend the Nepal House School not only receive a free education, they also have access to therapy, health care and meals. Their families are assisted at no cost as well. We provide parent education courses, support groups for mothers and fathers in the community, and one-on-one counselling for parents.

This week we celebrated Saraswati Puja. On this day students, teachers and families perform rituals in honour of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, education, learning and the arts.

At NHK our current students and the girls we support in our sister school visited with their families. Everyone made individual wishes to the goddess and then enjoyed eating Prasad together (usually fruits and sweets shared as thanksgiving to gods).

This festival also marks the beginning of spring as we make way for warmer and longer weather.

EDUCATION: from working in the community with our counselling services, the team noticed a need for further education services too.

Since opening in 2011, our school has provided a free education to about 25 girls/year. Our school takes in children who, because of poverty, family issues, or behaviour would never get a chance at an education.

We provide school uniforms & shoes, trained teachers, educational and art materials, and teaching of healthy social skills. We also feed the students when they are at the school.

For our ever increasing number of graduates who move onto regular school (65 and counting!) we provide them with tuition, school fees, uniforms & shoes to extend our support.

SAFETY: one of our key priorities at Nepal House. With many children and women still vulnerable to trafficking in Nepal, we aim to offer a safe space that enables prevention through education and support networks as well as supporting victims with our counselling services and school.

Following the recent flooding in Nepal that has particularly affected many in the Kathmandu valley and surrounding districts; Nepal House Kaski is continuing to work closely with the NGO federation Kathmandu to coordinate sending support from a number of NGOs in the Kaski district.

Natural disasters are in increasing risk in Nepal and it’s the poorest communities that are always most heavily impacted. Together we can provide support to those that need it most.
