Lumbini Crane Sanctuary 2,500 years ago Prince Siddhartha Gautama fought to save this magnificent bird, and today we wish to continue honoring this intent.

Lumbini Crane Sanctuary is dedicated to protecting wetlands for Sarus Crane and building community partnerships for Biodiversity Conservation in Lumbini Region of Nepal A joint effort between Nepalese Crane Conservationists and International Crane Foundation (ICF), USA in 1994 led to the establishment of Lumbini Crane Sanctuary in the sacred birthplace of the Buddha: Lumbini, Nepal. Working togeth

er with Lumbini Development Trust 265 acre land is leased to develope 6 new wetlands and create a breeding habitat for this endangered species. The purpose of the LCS is to combine the Buddhist percepts of environmental harmony with Lumbini's religious, cultural, and environmental restoration. The LCS activities include restoration and management of the sanctuary and Sarus Crane conservation outreach to the villages of the Lumbini region. LCS aims to conserve natural environment and ecological processes by:

Restoring and creating natural habitat diversity which is the representative of Nepalese Central Terai, with special consideration of Sarus Crane Conservation. Establishing an education facility and wild garden demonstrating Buddha’s love for nature and the relevance of these teachings for the solution of modern conservation problem. Involving local people in conservation and management of natural resources of surrounding areas.
