Nagarik Aawaz A nonprofit creating youth and women peace ambassadors for Just and Peaceful Nepal. Nagarik Aawaz is a peacebuilding organization.

We started our journey at the time of armed conflict in Nepal (1996 – 2006). The grievances and sufferings still exist in the communities. Our vision is just and peaceful Nepal. We believe that youths and women play a key role in making our dream a reality. We invest in the personal transformation of youths & women and help them become leaders with a strong belief in nonviolence. We provide space and resources for young and women leaders to flourish. Our programs and initiatives provide opportunities for the communities to sustain peace and nurture peaceful leaders.

Today’s talk show brought a timely and thought-provoking discussion on disaster governance in Nepal, reflecting on the aftermath of the Rasuwa Flood with speaker Dr. Shrijan Bahadur Malla. The discussion explored how disasters are not only natural events, but can also be shaped by human actions, choices, and systems. It highlighted the shared responsibility we have: directly or indirectly.

The discussion focused on the importance of mitigation, prevention and disaster risk reduction, along with how the cluster mechanism works during disasters, its importance and the gaps that still exist. It also explored disaster management and response, how disasters affect communities and different sectors, and the impact of the one-door policy.

The Rasuwa Flood reminds us of the human, social and economic costs of disasters: and the urgent need to move beyond response towards preparedness, prevention, risk reduction and resilient governance. An informative conversation that encourages us to reflect: Are we doing enough to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes?
