Ganga Sharma is currently studying law at the bachelor's level in Surkhet, and after she graduates, she aims to take the bar exam and become a full-time advocate. In about five years, she sees herself continuing her journey as a Women Human Rights Defender with a degree in hand.

During her mentorship with Advocacy Forum-Nepal this past year, one moment stayed with her the most: visiting the Conflict Victim Memorial Park. Standing there, she found herself imagining what it must feel like to lose someone close, to carry that kind of loss. That moment changed something in her.

It's what pushes her now to keep going, to defend human rights and stand with the people who are still fighting, still waiting, and still demanding justice.

This year's International Youth Day theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," is basically PBI's work in one line. The situations look completely different depending on where we are, but what people want is the same: . To do this work without fear, to be heard, to have some say in what happens next!

So today is the day for them. The young people who aren't waiting for permission — they're already making things better themselves.

Sandhya Tiruwa is an IT student who didn't know anything about the law, human rights, or what conflict was until she received a year-long mentorship from Advocacy Forum-Nepal.

Over the last year, Sandhya has learned what it takes to defend human rights and has gained firsthand experience dealing with a r**e case and a su***de case in her community in Kailali and Kanchanpur, in the Far West of Nepal.

Whether it's documenting or reporting cases of human rights violations, Sandhya has realized that people in marginalized communities are much more open and feel safer sharing their problems with women defenders. This has inspired her to continue contributing as a defender of human rights, even though her career plans lie in the information technology sector.

Maina Moti Chaudhary comes from the Free Bonded Laborers (Mukta Kamaiya) community in Kailali. She never had a formal education, but she grew up learning informally, and later joined the Kamaiya Mukti Movement — the push that got her speaking up for her local Tharu community.

Twenty-five years since the Kamaiya liberation was declared, full rehabilitation still hasn't happened. That's what keeps Maina going. Pushing the boundaries to make real impact.

A year-long mentorship with Advocacy Forum is now shaping her into a Human Rights Defender. She studies real cases from her community, steps in where she's needed, and works through a network of local conflict defenders to help resolve issues on the ground.
Alongside her ongoing work with the Kamaiya Movement, most of what she handles today is gender-based violence and conflict resolution, done hand in hand with local community leaders and officials.

From Passion to Action!

Meet Sagun, a young social work student getting ready to defend human rights in Surkhet and Karnali.

Over the last year as a mentee, Sagun has noticed that her generation is more aware, more open, and more willing to ask hard questions. The generation before them grew up without the same lens, and that very silence in between is where the harm slips through. That's the gap Sagun wants to close.

Along the way, Sagun has learned to document human rights violations, pushed back against child/early marriage, and stood alongside marginalized and LGBTIQ+ communities to amplify the voices that often go unheard.

After a year-long mentorship, Sagun is now heading home with a wealth of knowledge and passion, ready to turn her passion into action and be the bridge between generations.

Peacebuilding requires endurance, collaboration, and, most importantly, meaningful youth engagement 🤝🏻

Last month, we wrapped up our annual Civil Peace Service (CPS) Cross-Agency Learning Meeting, and the energy was incredible. Following last year's Gen Z movement, our biggest takeaway was clear: we all need to stop treating youth as just a "target group" and start working with them as important stakeholders!

Organized by GIZ CPS, KURVE Wustrow, and PBI, the meeting featured engaging participation from our grassroots partners from across the country. It was so refreshing to connect with different organizations, share our achievements and struggles, and build a real roadmap for what comes next.

📢 Call for Nominations: Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law 2026

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day on 10 December, the French and German Foreign Ministers honor human rights defenders worldwide for their outstanding commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights.

We invite nominations of individuals from all fields of human rights work in Nepal. Nominees may be active in promoting and protecting civil, political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, or other human rights.

Suggestions must be submitted by third parties.

The Embassies of France and Germany in Nepal will jointly select and propose one candidate to their respective Ministries. If selected, the award recipient will be honored during a ceremonial event in December and will receive an official certificate presented jointly by the French and German Ambassadors to Nepal.

Did you know? A study across 9 Child Reform Homes (Bal Sudhar Griha) in Nepal revealed that nearly 1 in 4 children interviewed (24%) reported experiencing torture or severe abuse during their arrest or detention.

This statistic comes from the recent Juvenile Justice Monitoring Report by our partner, Advocacy Forum-Nepal

A reform home is supposed to be a safe space for healing and growth, not a source of lifelong trauma!

Today, on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, we are standing with the survivors, local women human rights defenders, and our partners who are working tirelessly to change this. It is time to end the culture of silence around abuse in custody and bring real, systemic reform to Nepal’s juvenile justice facilities.

Roots, Resilience, and Rights! 🌱✨

After a year-long dedication & hard work, 12 amazing young women from Karnali and Sudurpaschim have now graduated from our mentorship program! They are now ready to step up as the next generation of Women Human Rights Defenders at the grassroots level.

From balancing university exams to caring for their newborn babies, these women have shown incredible strength and courage. Many come from marginalized Dalit and Mukta Kamaiya communities, and they are now heading home to Kailali, Kanchanpur, and Surkhet to protect human rights in their communities.
