World Environment Day 2026: Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, CIUD, in collaboration with CCBN, conducted a cleanliness and maintenance campaign of the existing groundwater recharge pit system at the CCBN premises as part of our continued commitment to sustainable water management and climate resilience.
The activity focused on cleaning and restoring the recharge structure to ensure its effective functioning in replenishing groundwater, supporting water security, and enhancing environmental sustainability. The program also served as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining existing green infrastructure and adopting practical, nature-based solutions to address climate challenges.
As we celebrate World Environment Day, we are reminded that protecting the environment begins with collective action. Through regular maintenance, responsible stewardship, and collaboration, we can contribute to a healthier ecosystem and a more resilient future for generations to come.
Caring for nature today, securing water for tomorrow.

Giving Water Back to Nature: The Fifteen Years of Water Stewardship Program Promoting Artificial Groundwater Recharging in the Kathmandu Valley

At the 2nd National Water Conference, organized by the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat (WECS), as one of the key events of Nepal National Glacier, Water and Weather Week 2026, Sudarshan Rajbhandari, Program Director of the Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD), presented the organization’s efforts to replenish groundwater in the Kathmandu Valley. He highlighted nearly fifteen years of work implementing various artificial groundwater recharge projects.
With financial support from The Coca-Cola Foundation and Bottlers Nepal Terai Limited, under their water stewardship program, and in technical collaboration with WaterAid Nepal and other partners, these initiatives were carried out in locations across the valley with high potential for shallow groundwater recharge such as Ranibari, Rajdal Army Barrack and public open space with the core settlement areas of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
According to Mr. Rajbhandari, between 2010 and 2024, a total of approximately 846.6 million liters of groundwater has been replenished through eight projects. This was achieved by installing around 125 recharge wells and constructing 421 meters of recharge trenches over a fifteen-year period. He also shared that CIUD had developed low-cost and efficient recharge techniques that use locally available materials.
