This Pride Month ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ, we celebrate the courage, resilience and leadership of Nepal's LGBTIQ+ communities, while reaffirming that equality must be experienced not only in law, but in everyday life.

In a study conducted by UN Women & the Government of Finland in Nepal, with Blue Diamond Society & Viamo - Digital Made Easy, '๐„๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐€๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: ๐€๐๐๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐•๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐€๐ ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ ๐‹๐†๐๐“๐ˆ๐+ ๐๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ž๐ฉ๐š๐ฅ' reveals a stark reality: 4 in 5 LGBTIQ+ respondents reported experiencing violence in their lifetime. Behind every statistic is a person whose rights, dignity and safety matter.

The evidence is clear. Progress requires action โ€” stronger protections, inclusive services, accountable institutions, and a society where everyone can live free from violence and discrimination, regardless of s*xual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or s*x characteristics.

Women and girls from the Madheshi community, one of Nepalโ€™s historically marginalized communities, shared how they are strengthening their leadership skills, building confidence, and expanding their role in community transformation. Through dialogue and capacity-building initiatives, many women spoke about their aspirations to engage in political leadership, public services and contribute to local decision-making processes.

Young girls shared inspiring stories of raising awareness about harmful practices and engaging with their peers, families, and community members to promote positive change. As change agents, they are helping to challenge discriminatory norms, encourage solidarity, and create more inclusive communities where women and girls can thrive.

At the Gender-Responsive Procurement (GRP) Workshop held in Madhesh Province under the EU-UN Joint Programme, Empowered Women, Prosperous Nepal (EWPN), Chef and Founder of Mithila Thali by Chef Santosh Shah , Santosh Shah shared how inclusive procurement can drive meaningful change.

As the founder of Mithila Thali, Santosh Shah has built a brand that celebrates local culture, traditional knowledge, and the people behind it. Drawing from this experience, he highlighted how procurement decisions can be a powerful driver of inclusion and economic opportunity.

By sourcing from women-owned and gender-responsive businesses, companies can strengthen supply chains, create local economic opportunities, and contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

His message serves as a reminder that sourcing from women-owned and gender-responsive businesses is not only the right thing to doโ€”it also strengthens supply chains, creates local value, and contributes to more sustainable and resilient economies.

This , the message from Nepal is clear: climate action must be inclusive, evidence-based, and driven by the people most affected.

The upcoming State of Gender and Climate Change in Nepal Update Report, developed by UN Women, ICIMOD, and UNEP in consultation with the Government of Nepal, finds that climate impacts, including floods, landslides, droughts, glacial retreat, and erratic monsoons, have intensified since 2021, threatening livelihoods, food security, health, and infrastructure. Women, Dalits, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups continue to face disproportionate risks due to persistent inequalities in access to resources, information, services, and decision-making.

The report highlights promising solutions across Nepal, from women leaders shaping local climate decisions to women farmers adopting climate-resilient practices that strengthen livelihoods and protect ecosystems.

It emphasizes that effective climate action requires inclusive leadership, empowered institutions, stronger coordination and accountability, and the translation of policy commitments into action. As Nepal advances NDC 3.0 and aligns with frameworks such as the Belรฉm Gender Action Plan, progress on these priorities will be essential for delivering equitable and sustainable climate action.

Along with this, through the Finlandโ€“UN Women partnership, womenโ€™s groups are strengthening local economies, leading climate action, and demonstrating how gender-responsive climate solutions build resilient and sustainable communities.

A Gender-Responsive Procurement (GRP) workshop was held on 30โ€“31 May 2026, in Madhesh Province under the EU-UN Joint Programme, Empowered Women, Prosperous Nepal (EWPN).

Organized by UN Women Nepal, the workshop brought together private sector representatives to strengthen understanding of the Womenโ€™s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), with a particular focus on gender-responsive procurement practices and promoting inclusive, equitable and sustainable business approaches within supply chains and workplace systems.

Gender-responsive procurement is the sustainable procurement of goods, services and works that considers their impact on gender equality and womenโ€™s empowerment. By sourcing from women-owned and gender-responsive enterprises, businesses can help create more inclusive value chains, expand economic opportunities for women, and contribute to more resilient and sustainable economies.

As Nepal advances inclusive economic development agenda, the private sector can play a critical role in ensuring that procurement decisions create opportunities for women entrepreneurs and businesses, while driving positive social and economic outcomes for all.

With support from the EUโ€“UN Joint Programme, Empowered Women, Prosperous Nepal (EWPN), 19,090 women between 2023โ€“2025 have gained the skills, confidence, tools, market linkages, and networks needed to build sustainable livelihoods and shape their own futures.

Aligned with the Government of Nepalโ€™s commitment to advancing womenโ€™s economic empowerment and inclusive development, the programme is helping create an enabling environment where women can participate, lead, and thrive in local economies.
As reflected in the recently announced national budget, Nepal continues to prioritize entrepreneurship, job creation, and enhanced support for women-led enterprises, recognizing women's economic empowerment as a key driver of sustainable development and prosperity.

Because when women thrive economically, families, communities, and economies prosper.
