Noting new research and practice-based insights from Nepal’s four decades of community forestry development, we are proud to present the book "Restoring Forests and Improving Livelihoods in Nepal: Four Decades of Community Forestry." Looking back into stories of changes from the era of "Himalayan degradation" in the 1970s to the global success of community forestry in the 2000s, this book presents a comprehensive outlook into the political economy and changing community dynamics which has shaped the everyday practice of community forestry and its contribution to livelihoods and forest restoration.

With Dr Hemant Ojha as the lead editor, this book consists of 19 chapters under different thematic areas which will be of great interest to researchers, scholars, and practitioners working on forest restoration and conservation, community development, environmental policy and planning, and sustainable development.

A critical resource in shaping the scope and depth of this book was a project called Enhancing Livelihoods from Improved Forest Management in Nepal (EnLiFT2) which was funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).

In various countries of Global South, including Nepal, the process of rewilding is naturally succeeding due to the consequences of complex socio-economic divers. The tension of such natural rewilding and the significance of human involvement in such transitioning landscape is impacting the ecosystem as well as the management approaches. Similarly, the increase in rural out-migration in areas of marginal agricultural production due to shift towards off-farm livelihoods for income and food security has accelerate the impact of the issue.

Noting the emerging issue of naturally regenerating forests due to increase in complex socio-economic drivers, Mcgunnigle et al., has published two articles titled, "Is rewilding too wild? Assessing the benefits and challenges of forest succession on abandoned land in the mid-hills of Nepal", and "Intermediate levels of socio-ecological disturbance drive higher biodiversity in naturally regenerating forests: A case study from Nepal", highlighting the experiences of rural households and farmers to analyse the socio-ecological factors that influence forest succession and compare those insights with perceptions of the concept of rewilding as understood by environmental management professionals in Nepal.
