📣18th December is International Migrant’s Day
💥Wars, conflict, insecurities, and climate change fuel displacement and migration globally. In 2020, more than 280 million people were international migrants. At the same time, reasons to leave one’s home are wide-ranging. But many migrants have in common that they represent one of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in all societies. Countless migrants have temporary and unprotected jobs, such as in the Middle East. Thousands of migrant workers lose their lives every year, many of them from Nepal.
✈️Migration is a growing issue in Nepal. In 2023, Nepal’s migration rate shows a growth of almost 17 percent from the previous year. Hundreds of young Nepalis leave the country daily to find employment in India, Malaysia, Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia 🌏. Leaving their families often comes with implications for community harmony and family peace ☮️.
👉Sanjal currently explores opportunities to support migrant workers and their families through livelihood in their communities, awareness of the risks of migration, and through advocacy. Previously, Sanjal and its members implemented a project on migration and HIV infections. Stay tuned and spread the word.
