Oxfam in Nepal

Oxfam in Nepal This is the official page of Oxfam in Nepal. Oxfam works with partners around the world to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.

As part of Oxfam International, a confederation of 21 Oxfam affiliates, we work in 85 countries. Oxfam’s vision is a just world without poverty: a world where people are entitled to five fundamental rights: a sustainable livelihood; basic social services; life and security; to be heard; and equity. We work to support people in realizing these rights and fight poverty and injustice through campaign

ing, long-term development work, and emergency response. Oxfam has been working in Nepal since the early 1980s undertaking various development initiatives addressing poverty and injustice faced by the population, especially women and other socially and economically excluded groups. The level of Oxfam’s engagement increased substantially after restoration of democracy in 1990 as it became easier for civil society to work in the new political environment. Over the years, Oxfam has worked in partnership with local civil society organisations and government authorities and services to promote rural livelihoods, and vulnerable communities’ resilience to climatic shocks and disasters. It has also significantly contributed to empowering community people, especially women, to negotiate with people in power, influence decision making processes, claim rights and essential services to which they are entitled, demand accountability on the part of duty bearers and engage larger masses in advocacy efforts.

Transforming Leaves into Livelihoods & Climate Action!
🍃 This , Oxfam celebrates communities transforming Sal tree leaves into Duna-Tapari (leaf plates), a zero-waste alternative to single-use plastics.
By embracing a circular economy, this community-led initiative tackles three massive challenges:
🔥 Wildfire Prevention: Gathering dry leaves reduces the biomass that fuels forest fires, protecting biodiversity and keeping carbon locked in the forest.
🌱 Eco-Friendly Alternatives: These traditional plates offer a sustainable option for events, stopping plastic pollution at its source.
💼 Dignified Livelihoods: Local enterprise development is creating vital, green income streams for vulnerable households.
A sustainable future begins with empowering communities to turn environmental challenges into lasting opportunities.

Glimpses of the Mahakali Sambad organized by Oxfam in collaboration with local partners, CRDS, NEEDS Nepal, and RUWDUC.

Mahakali Sambad is a multi-stakeholder platform dedicated to community-led water governance in the Mahakali basin. The event brought together government officials, civil society, and citizen scientists. Key achievements included recognition of citizen science, commitments from local governments, and alignment on transboundary collaboration priorities. Moving forward, the transboundary communities will continue such dialogues to institutionalize community-led data generation, flood early warning communication, and ensure sustained engagement of local governments and stakeholders.

Happy International Women’s Day! 🌍✨
Today, we aren’t just celebrating, we’re advocating for a safer, more resilient future.

Our latest research report, "Building Disaster Resilient Communities Through Women’s Leadership" highlights a critical gap, women are the first to respond when disaster strikes, yet the last to be heard. Oxfam is here to bridge that gap and shift the power.

Disaster response is stronger when it’s inclusive. This , let's invest in the leaders who are already holding our communities together.
