🪷 Gunla Punhi
Gunla Punhi, also known as Gunla Parva, is one of the most important and sacred months for Newar Buddhists. It is a time when devotees come together to observe the Dhamma, visit sacred Buddhist sites, practice generosity, and strengthen their spiritual connection.
Gunla carries a deep connection with the ancient tradition of the Buddha’s rain retreat, when monks stayed in one place, devoted themselves to practice, and shared the teachings of the Dhamma with the local community.
During this sacred month, the sounds of Gunla Bajan, daily visits to Bahas and Bahis, lighting of butter lamps, and acts of offering fill our communities with a unique sense of devotion and togetherness.
For us, Gunla is not only about following a tradition. It is about remembering the values behind the tradition—compassion, generosity, mindfulness, wisdom, and respect for the Dhamma.
As the younger generation, it is our responsibility to understand these traditions, take part in them, and help keep this beautiful heritage alive for the generations that follow.
May Gunla inspire us to look within, practice kindness, and keep the light of Dhamma alive in our hearts and communities. 🪷🙏
