Under the BAGAR (Building Agroforestry-based Adaptation Plans for Resilient Floodplains) project being implemented by The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) in partnership with Heifer International Nepal and ForestAction Nepal has developed Hydrological Models and Flood Risk Projections for Marin Rural Municipality, Sindhuli and Gadhimai Municipality, Rautahat.

These models help to identify flood prone areas highlighting vulnerable zones, project flood depths, evolving river dynamics and provide critical insights for planning of disaster risk reduction/climate change adaptation strategies and sustainable land use.

By combining science with community-based solutions like ecosystem restoration and agroforestry with practical land use plan for floodplain restoration, BAGAR is supporting at-risk communities to reduce flood risk, restore degraded floodplains while strengthening livelihoods and food/fodder security.

BAGAR Project is envisioning to transform vulnerable floodplain communities in Nepal’s Bagmati River Basin by combining climate adaptation with the power of Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) approaches

Marking World Water Day 2026, the UN World Water Development Report (WWDR) 2026 was officially launched in Nepal, featuring the Nepali translation of the report's Executive Summary and Facts and Figures. The launch took place during the Second National Water Conference, an event held during the Nepal National Glacier, Water and Weather Week (NNGWWW) 2026 on 22 March. Centered on the theme “𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞: 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬,” the report highlights access to water as a fundamental human right and calls for inclusive and equitable water governance.

SEN is honored to have actively contributed to the official launch of the report in Nepal and Nepali translation and dissemination of its Facts & Figures and Executive Summary, in collaboration with UNESCO Office in Kathmandu and Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology (MBUST). We extend our sincere thanks to UNESCO for providing this valuable opportunity.

SEN hosted a delegation of 18 government officials from Bhutan for a 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 on Climate Adaptation and Water Security in Kathmandu, along with a field visit to the Ratu Watershed from 26 March to 1 April 2026. Through engaging technical sessions led by experts, participants explored key themes including Climate and Hydrological Monitoring, Early Warning Systems, Nature-based Solutions, Watershed Management, Climate-resilient Water Supply and Community-led Adaptation Approaches.

Participants were taken to a two-day field visit to the Ratu Watershed in Mahottari and Dhanusha districts, to observe the community-based watershed management, bioengineering, and water resource conservation. Our local partner Community Development & Advocacy Forum Nepal (CDAFN) guided the delegation and showed interventions on water security and adaptation in the field. Participants observed cutoff wall-based drinking water system, Raised Ventilated Tank (RVT) drinking water system, gully control structures and soil erosion prevention measures.

We were delighted to welcome Mr. Hrithik Babu Shrestha, founder of Gyanbazzar, to SEN office on 8 April 2026, marking another meaningful step in our growing collaboration. Gyanbazzar is a digital knowledge platform offering access to research papers, journals, e-books, and academic articles from the Universities in Nepal.

His visit focused on strengthening ties between Gyanbazzar and SEN and explored how Gyanbazzar will serve as a dedicated knowledge hub for SEN, hosting its publications, research outputs, and resources to support open science and wider accessibility.

🎨🎬 At the sixth edition of the Third Pole Series, organized together with Chaudhary Foundation and Karnali Integrated Rural Development and Research Centre, women and students from Bardiya brought their stories to life through art, showing what it truly means to live alongside a changing river. Every piece carried the weight of real experiences, real struggles, and real hope.

This was followed by a screening of Dhye Dreams by filmmaker Shanta Nepali, a deeply moving documentary where the women of Upper Mustang speak through their silence, their labor, and their will to stay rooted despite water scarcity and displacement.

When women pour their thoughts, grief, and resilience into their work, it stops being just art or film. It becomes a mirror, and a message. 🌊
