A team of researchers, led by from is currently conducting a camera-trapping study on pangolins in Udayapur District, eastern Nepal. Over the coming month, the team will actively survey pangolin trails, feeding signs, and burrows to document their activity patterns, habitat use, behavior, and interactions with other wildlife species. Likewise, the team will also carry out school, community and door-based outreach programs to sensitize pangolin conservation in the region.

Pangolins are among the world's most threatened mammals due to illegal wildlife trade and habitat loss, yet many aspects of their ecology in Nepal remain poorly understood. The information generated through this study will help fill knowledge gaps and support evidence-based conservation efforts for these elusive species.

We gratefully acknowledge The Rufford Foundation for supporting this conservation initiative. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Division Forest Office (DFO), Triveni, Udayapur; local Community Forest User Groups; and our dedicated Pangolin Guardians, whose collaboration and commitment are invaluable to pangolin conservation efforts in the region.

Each year, on May 23, the world celebrates World Turtle Day to raise awareness about the conservation of turtles and tortoises; one of the most threatened vertebrate groups globally.

Today, we marked this occasion through on-ground conservation activities with local communities in Udayapur district, strengthening community engagement for tortoise conservation. A total of 36 participants joined the session, which included participatory mapping of tortoise presence, information sharing, and conservation awareness presentations.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Division Forest Office, Udayapur, Triveni, Maruhaharit Community Forest, Paluwatar Community Forest, and Wild Care Nepal team members , Ashish Pokharel, and Sanjib Thokar for their valuable support in successfully conducting this program.

Today, on International Day for Biological Diversity, we are reminded that global conservation begins with local action.

At Wild Care Nepal, we believe conservation grows strongest when local communities, young conservationists, and science work together. Something as simple as a local youth speaking for wildlife conservation, a farmer choosing coexistence, or a community member assisting researchers in the field can go a long way in protecting biodiversity. These small yet meaningful actions collectively contribute to healthier ecosystems and a more sustainable future for both people and wildlife.

As we celebrate this day, we extend our gratitude to conservationists, researchers, students, local communities, and all individuals working tirelessly to protect and promote local biodiversity.

The Barasingha (Swamp deer) is a globally threatened deer species found in Nepal and India. Strongly associated with wetland and grassland ecosystems, it thrives in floodplains, marshes, and tall grass habitats. It is one of the largest deer, helping to maintain grassland structure as a grazer and contributing to tiger diet. Shuklaphanta National Park has the largest single herd of Barasingha.
This year, Wild Care Nepal collaborated with Shuklaphanta National Park and other conservation partners including National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Nepal, ZSL Nepal, Himalayan Nature through Connect project to conduct a Barasingha survey. We sincerely appreciate the generous support of Yak Brewing Company.

We have successfully completed the Wild Cats Series 2026, held from 5–7 May in Birendranagar, Surkhet. A total of 23 participants, including 15 university level students and 7 citizen scientists from different regions attended the series.

The theoretical sessions were conducted by experts who shared information on different aspects of wildlife ecology, research and conservation practices.

Dr. Puspa Raj Acharya, Mid West University presented an overview of biodiversity in Karnali Province. Dr. Babu Ram Lamichhane delivered two insightful sessions on Big Cat Conservation in Nepal and Humans and large felids: Conflict to Co-existence highlighting identification techniques, key challenges and ongoing conservation efforts. Dr. Rama Mishra delivered an inspiring session on small carnivores in Nepal, with a focus on the Felidae family, connecting the discussion to her journey with the fishing cat. Mr. Sabin Adhikari provided an overview of Wild Care Nepal and the objectives of the series and camera-trapping techniques in wildlife research. Mr. Vishal Bhandari shared an insightful session on Email and Communication Etiquette guidelines for effective communication in digital interactions. Participants were also engaged in creative and experience-sharing sessions.

During the session, our citizen scientists- Maya Sk (Kanchanpur), Dinesh Acharya & Narayan Chaudhary (Bardiya), Prem Jaisi (Surkhet), Shanti Chaudhary (Banke), Govinda Bahadur Singh & Dhurba Raj Magar (Jajarkot) shared their field experience both formally and informally throughout the series.

In addition, participants also took part in practical activities including camera trapping, bird watching, community surveys and an educational outreach program at SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, Kalagaun. The series concluded with a memorable visit to the iconic landmark Kakre Bihar along with the participants.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our local partners- Mr. Shah Ganga and Mr. Madan Acharya as well as Mrs. Indra Chalise, chairperson of Bhairav Commumity Forest, Ward No. 4, Surkhet , who contributed to the success of our program. We sincerely appreciate the warm hospitality and support provided by Keshav Kathayat, owner of Culinary The Hospitality (CTH), who made our stay comfortable.

We are also thankful to our supporters-
