Abdullah Anbar Anan Titir (Digitally Rights Limited, Bangladesh) shares her key takeaways on implementing UNESCO’s Guidelines for Digital Platforms.

Her message is clear: ✅ Platforms must review AI tools to protect privacy & free speech. ✅ Content moderation must be localized to understand regional nuances. ✅ Civil society is the bridge between policy and community needs.

We aren't just users; we are stakeholders in this information ecosystem.

Sunita Dangol, Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, reminds us that our languages are more than just words. They are a repository of knowledge, information, community history, and identity.

It is vital not only to preserve and promote these languages but also to transfer them to the next generation. To ensure the knowledge and information currently locked within the pages of ancient manuscripts are preserved through digitisation and to ensure more people have access to them, UNESCO, in collaboration with Archive Nepal , is implementing the "Preserving 200 to 800 Year Old Newari Manuscripts for the Future" project.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?
The answers remind us that content is not just about reach, visibility, or trends. It is about responsibility.

In today’s digital world, information is created, shared and amplified across platforms. This makes ethical content creation more important than ever.

It means verifying information before sharing, respecting dignity and privacy, avoiding harm, being transparent with audiences, and helping build trust in the information we see and share.

This is also where Media and Information Literacy matters. MIL helps both creators and audiences question information, verify sources, recognize misinformation and participate responsibly in digital spaces.

As digital content creators become important voices in Nepal’s information ecosystem, ethical content creation and MIL go hand in hand, strengthening information integrity, supporting freedom of expression and contributing to safer, more inclusive and more trustworthy digital spaces.

The consultation, organised by UNESCO in partnership with TechPana Media Pvt. Ltd. under an IPDC-supported initiative and Held under the global theme “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” provided a platform to reflect on the evolving conditions for press freedom within Nepal’s digital information ecosystem. Discussions addressed key challenges such as online abuse, misinformation and manipulated content, AI bias, content verification, editorial accountability, ethical digital practices, and the mental health impacts of digital harassment.

Participants also examined the legal, ethical, and social implications of artificial intelligence, including risks associated with inaccurate AI generated content, linguistic and cultural bias, and the need for human oversight and verification. The dialogue further highlighted the importance of transparency, attribution, and accountability across both mainstream media and digital content creation.

What happens when youth representing all seven provinces of Nepal convene in one place?

Results:
👉Discussion and establishment of long-term engagement on a range of topics including Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Media and Information Literacy (MIL), transversal competency, Global Citizenship, and Peace Education for future generations.
👉New commitments to work together for shared goals toward peacebuilding, actively engaging decision-makers, civil society, and digital platforms to promote peaceful narratives and contribute to SDG 4.7.
👉Expanding a growing global network of YoD-COP alumni, to create cascading effects to empower their own communities.

Recently, the Youth-driven Communities for Peace (YoD-COP) program brought together 32 diverse youth leaders for a three-day workshop in Kathmandu from 21–23 April 2026. Organized by UNESCO MGIEP in collaboration with the National Youth Council, the workshop engaged and empowered the selected youth representatives across various domains. Through interactive sessions, applied exercises, and peer exchange, participants engaged with real-world scenarios, strengthening their ability to translate these approaches into locally grounded action.

Toward a shared goal to contribute and lead for peacebuilding, the workshop placed equal emphasis on individual reflection and collective learning, recognizing that peacebuilding requires both personal and systemic engagement.

When freedom of expression weakens, so does the ability to share, seek and receive reliable information.

Protecting it means safeguarding the flow of information that supports understanding, accountability and dialogue.

Peace begins with truth.

Access to reliable, verified information is not optional. It is fundamental to building peaceful, just and resilient societies.

Yet today, this foundation is under strain. Freedom of expression has declined by 10% globally since 2012. Self-censorship for journalists has surged by 63%, as they increasingly avoid reporting on corruption, human rights and environmental issues. At the same time, impunity for crimes against journalists remains at 85%.

When information is manipulated, it fuels division and weakens trust. When it is free and truthful, it strengthens accountability, dialogue and human rights.
On World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO calls for renewed commitment to protect freedom of expression and support journalism as a pillar of peace.

Journalism shapes peace.
