UN-Habitat Nepal United Nations Human Settlement Programme As a UN organization, our work is grounded in human
rights.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), established in 1978, is the lead agency within the UN system for coordinating activities in the field of human settlement development. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It also serves as the focal point for mo

nitoring progress on implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA) - the global plan of action adopted at the third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), held in Quito, Ecuador in 2016. UN-Habitat contributes to the overall objective of the United Nations system to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development, and particularly works on the challenges of urbanization - its demographic, environmental, economic, social and spatial impacts. UN-Habitat started its operation in Nepal to support reconstruction after the 1988 earthquake and has continued its work in collaboration with partners’ ranging from the government and local authorities to a wide cross-section of Non-Governmental Organizations and civil society groups. Aiming for the better livable and sustainable urban area and human settlements, its mission is to promote development of socially and environmentally sustainable settlements and achieve adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat support to the Government and people of Nepal is primarily focused on four sectors: Urban Planning and Climate Change, Land Management, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), and Inclusive Development and Housing. UN-Habitat works with both national and sub-national governments, providing technical support for policy formulations, strengthen capacities for localization of the policies, and collaborate to execute projects and initiatives to demonstrate policy implementation. UN-Habitat in Nepal remains commited to support implementation of NUA and SDGs, through mainstreaming Green, Resilient, Inclusive Development in its processes and support to the government to reinforce the need of ensuring inclusive, safe and sustainable settlements for all, focusing particularly on the needs of the most marginalized - urban poor, slum-dwellers, landless, women and youths. Secure land rights go beyond ownership; they shape power, dignity, and inclusion.

This video brings together some insights from the 'Consultative Workshop on Strengthening Land Tenure Security, Inclusive Land Use Planning, and Land-based Climate-Responsive Livelihoods organized as part of the project implemented by UN-Habitat with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) of the Republic of Korea.

At the Workshop community leaders, government officials, and international experts reflected among others on Nepal’s land tenure challenges, including women’s land rights, informal settlements, forest and land discrepancies, and land certification processes. The discussions highlight how secure land tenure is fundamental to equality, resilience, and shared prosperity.

Wellness goes beyond the absence of illness. In our cities and communities, it is shaped by where people live, how they move, and whether their homes and neighbourhoods offer safety, dignity, and opportunity.

From equitable access to adequate housing and basic urban services, to freedom from the threat of forced eviction and displacement, wellness is about creating urban environments where every person can make informed choices and live with dignity.

This year, the world marks the first International Wellness Day, following the adoption of a General Assembly resolution led by Nepal.

Today and everyday, we reaffirm our collective commitment to advancing inclusive, people-centred approaches so that everyone can thrive in wellness.

A joint monitoring visit is being conducted from 8 to 11 April, 2026, across five municipalities in Jajarkot and Rukum West, bringing together key stakeholders including National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, Ministry of Home Affairs, Local Governments, UNDP Nepal and UN-Habitat Nepal, in close collaboration with the local partners.

The team interacted with communities and stakeholders, where project interventions are being implemented- restoring Community infrastructures, Irrigation Canal, support Emergency Operation Centers, Construct Prefab Buildings, Common Facility Centers and Market Centers for advancing social and livelihood recovery of the communities, public service continuity and strengthening local disaster risk governance. The collective reflection and feedback from wider stakeholders will contribute to strengthen effectiveness, sustainability, and impact of the project.

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Jajarkot and West Rukum, in November 2023, recovery efforts continue to move forward with purpose. With the support of the Government of Japan and in partnership with the Government of Nepal (GoN), UNDP Nepal is leading implementation of the "Livelihoods Improvement and Disaster Resilience Enhancement in the areas affected by the Jajarkot Earthquake" project in partnership with UN-HABITAT.

🏠 Successful completion of the roundtable on “Access to Housing in Nepal: From Dialogue to Collective Action”

Centered on social housing, the event brought together stakeholders from government institutions, academia, private sector, civil society, and development partners to collectively reflect on how Nepal can move from fragmented efforts to scalable, system-driven housing solutions.

🎤 The discussion was enriched by the keynote address by Mr. Kishore Thapa (Former Secretary, Government of Nepal), and guided by moderators from UN-Habitat Nepal, the Ministry of Urban Development, and DUDBC across three focused sessions on delivery, financing, and resilience.

💬 Valuable special remarks were delivered by:
• Ms. Lajana Manandhar (Lumanti Support Group for Shelter)
• Dr. Om Rajbhandary (Brihat Group)
• Mr. Padma Sunder Joshi (Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology)

🤝 The active engagement of Joint Secretaries from the Ministry of Urban Development and a wide range of stakeholders helped steer the dialogue toward practical and implementable pathways for social housing in Nepal.

🌍 Key social housing priorities emerging from the discussion, contributing to Nepal’s voice for WUF 13 in Azerbaijan:
• Moving from pilot projects to institutionalized social housing systems at scale
• Strengthening governance and coordination across all tiers of government
• Unlocking sustainable financing models, including PPPs, rental housing, and community-led approaches
• Embedding resilience and climate responsiveness without increasing costs for low-income households
• Prioritizing low-income, landless, renters, and marginalized groups in housing delivery

📌 This event marked an important step toward advancing social housing as a national priority and carrying forward a clear, collective voice to WUF 13.

For many landless and marginalized families in Nepal, securing a stable livelihood remains a constant struggle. Seasonal wage labor is often their main source of income, leaving households vulnerable to food insecurity and economic shocks. In this context, beekeeping is emerging as a practical and climate‑smart livelihood option -one that requires little land, modest investment, and can be managed from home.

To promote this opportunity, UN-Habitat Nepal as part of the ongoing project funded by Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Kores implemented a five‑days’ Basic Beekeeping Training for Landless Farmers in Dang district. The training was conducted from 16 to 22 March 2026 in partnership with Good Neighbors International Nepal and the Community Self Reliance Centre (CSRC).

The training brought together 46 landless and marginalized farmers from three Self‑Help Groups including 21 from Thulichaur Land Right Forum of Gadhawa-5, 11 from Kalapani Land Right Farmer Group of Rapti-5, and 14 from Dandagaun Land Right Farmer Group from Gadhawa-2. Most of the participants had limited access to land and relied primarily on daily labor or remittances for livelihood. Women formed the majority of participants, with strong representation from youth and historically marginalized communities. For many, the training introduced a new way of thinking about livelihoods - one that do not depend on large landholdings or heavy physical labor.

“Before this training, we believed income generation was only possible if you had a lot of land,” shared one participant. “Now I understand that with proper use even a small piece of land can be productive.”

The sessions were facilitated by Beekeeping Specialist Rudra Mani Poudel, and a commercial beekeeper Ashok Kumar Sharma,. Over five days, participants gained practical knowledge on honeybee species, colony behavior, hive handling, seasonal flowering plants, feeding practices, and basic pest and disease management. The participants also joined an exposure visit to established beekeeping enterprises in Dang district, including a beekeeping firm, an individual bee farm, and a honeycomb manufacturing plant. Interacting with experienced entrepreneurs and observing commercial operations helped participants visualize beekeeping as a realistic livelihood opportunity.

“I never imagined that I could ever do bee keeping given I had no land,” one woman participant reflected. “After learning and practicing during the training, I feel confident to do this on my own.”

“We used to think bees only sting and beekeeping was not for people like us,” shared another participant. “Now we know it needs little land, less labor, and can generate income from home. I am motivated to start my own beekeeping.” For landless households with limited options, beekeeping offers several advantages: no need for large land ownership, compatibility with household responsibilities, strong potential for women and youth engagement, and supplementary income that strengthens household resilience. By the end of the training, participants gained not only technical skills but also renewed confidence and hope for the future. As one participant summarized: “This training has given us hope. Beekeeping feels like something we can do - and benefit from - for our families’ future.”

The training contributes to the broader objectives of the ongoing Project intervention aiming to strengthen tenure security, promote inclusive livelihoods, and support climate‑smart agriculture for vulnerable communities.

Disasters are painful for everyone-but they affect the most vulnerable the hardest !

When essential services are disrupted, it is not just infrastructure that is lost, but dignity, safety, and hope. Women-headed households, persons with disabilities, older people, children, and marginalized communities face even greater hardships to access basic services.

With financial support from the Government of Japan and in partnership with UNDP Nepal, UN-HABITAT is nearing completion of government facilities to help continue essential services delivery to 9,000+people and strengthen service delivery to nearly 150,000 more .

This is not just about recovery-it is about saving lives and rebuilding dignity where it is needed the most.

Water and sanitation are not only a matter of infrastructure — they are also a matter of equality, dignity and rights.

This year, World Water Day focuses on water and gender, highlighting how unequal access to housing, land and basic services leaves many without clean water and sanitation.

The 𝐔𝐍-𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥 team is recognized as 𝐔𝐍-𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬!!!

This recognition celebrates a deliberate, intersectional focus on ensuring all women - especially Indigenous women, Dalit women, and those living in Informal Settlements - can securely access their land rights.

Through the 𝐋𝟒𝐀𝐂𝐓 project, funded by the 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚'𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬 (𝐌𝐀𝐅𝐑𝐀), national policies have been turned into real impact:

-23,713 landless and informal settler households supported with temporary land cards

-32 landless families received land ownership certificates - 27 issued as joint ownership

-2,176 women (80% of participants) trained to practice climate-smart agriculture

At the celebration event, 𝐌𝐬. 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 (𝐔𝐍 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧) underscored the need of a collective action to uphold gender equality, highlighting the strong nexus between access to justice and access to land. As 𝐌𝐬. 𝐄𝐝𝐥𝐚𝐦 𝐘𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐮 (𝐔𝐍-𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭) and 𝐌𝐬. 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐣𝐚𝐧 (𝐇𝐮𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧) congratulated 𝐔𝐍-𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥 for opening a clear path for tens of thousands of women to access equal land rights.

Securing land rights is foundational to gender equality, economic opportunity, and leaving no woman behind.
