in Nepal isn’t new—it’s decades of lack of enforcement of policies, haphazard urbanization, and the failure of our development models. Kathmandu and other cities of Nepal consistently ranks among the world’s most polluted cities, claiming 26,000 premature deaths annually. Yet the crisis only worsens.

Under Article 30 of the Constitution of Nepal, every citizen has the fundamental right to live in a clean and healthy environment—a right that must be protected, not neglected.

🚨 AIR QUALITY ALERT: Kathmandu ranks 2nd most polluted in the world today.
Today, Kathmandu has been ranked as the 2nd most polluted city in the world by IQAir. This alarming ranking is corroborated by local data, with the Bipad Portal and Air Gradient monitors showing the air quality has plummeted into the "unhealthy" zone with a PM2.5 reading of 160+. The air is thick with pollutants, posing serious risks to all residents.
We need to act now to protect our health. Here is how to protect yourself while Kathmandu’s air remains "Unhealthy" (160+ PM2.5).

Stay safe, Kathmandu. Mask up and limit your time outdoors today.

On 31 January 2026, NYCA successfully organized a Cycle Rally for Clean Air with support from Animal Nepal and Climate Smart Cities.

This rally aimed to raise awareness about air pollution, which reaches its peak during the winter season, and to encourage the community to take action for a cleaner environment.

Participants from across the city came together to promote sustainable practices, such as cycling, reducing emissions, and supporting clean energy initiatives. The rally was not just a ride but a movement, demonstrating that collective effort can make a real difference in protecting our air and our health.

Awareness and Capacity Building Program on Air Quality Management and the use of air quality sensors was successfully conducted at Lalitpur Metropolitan City–Ward 22, Bungamati. Implemented in support and close collaboration with the Ward Office and Lalitpur Metropolitan City, the program was led by Swachha Vatabaran Nagarik Samaj with technical support from Clean Air Network Nepal and Clean Energy Nepal.

A brief presentation on air pollution issues by Bhola Bhattarai and sensor use and data handling by Keshav Raj Pokharel was presented.

Data from the air quality sensor installed in the Farsidol area was showed with the increment of the graphs each day rasing more concer to locals, and the participatory session actively engaged local residents, increasing awareness of the health and environmental impacts of air pollution. As a key outcome, an 11-member local sub-committee was formed to advance clean air and environmental actions—marking the first community-led sub-committee of its kind in the city, engaging local citizens.

CANN and CEN teams visited Farsidol (Ward 22, Lalitpur), a residential settlement where polluted air lingers with no escape. Rising cases of COPD, heart disease, and respiratory illness are no longer statistics—they are lived realities, and a direct violation of the constitutional right to a clean environment.

Change begins with evidence. We have installed an air quality sensor in Farsidol to turn suffering into data and data into action.

We stand with the people of Farsidol—because clean air is not a privilege, it is a right.

As winter arrives, Nepal once again faces a thick blanket of dust and smog. With dry air trapping pollutants, cities like Kathmandu see worsening air quality — turning calm winter days into a season of sickness. Air pollution has now become Nepal’s leading health risk, causing over 41,000 deaths in 2023 alone.

While the government and organizations like Clean Air Network Nepal (CANN) are working to control dust, promote electric vehicles, and raise awareness, lasting change demands collective effort. Every small action — from avoiding open burning to supporting cleaner transport — can help clear the air we all share.

Let’s make this winter a little clearer, one step at a time.

As the cold winds of winter sweep across Nepal, a familiar haze begins to settle over the cities. The dry air of winter traps dust and smoke close to

On Bhadra 24, the Birgunj Metropolitan City office was burned down during the GEN-Z protest, and curfew was called to handle the situation, which halted our campaign. Despite this scenario and challenges, the team resumed the campaign on 27th Bhadra in close coordination and collaboration with the Birgunj Metropolitan City, installing one sensor at the Birgunj Metropolitan City office and handing over another sensor to municipal staff, who can deploy it at a second site once the situation stabilizes.

During the visit, we observed the city’s recovery efforts: cleaning operations are underway, looted equipment and furniture are being recovered, and municipal staff are assessing losses and planning service restoration. We sincerely thank Er. Rakesh Shah, Head of Disaster and Environment Management, and Prakash Ayer, Officer at Environment and Greenery Promotion, for their dedication under challenging circumstances. Also would like to appreciate our co-founder Bhushan Tuladhar for his dedication to this campaign.

CEN remains committed to strengthening local air quality monitoring and hopes municipalities across Nepal will resume services efficiently, moving toward a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient “New Nepal.”
