Bimala's journey as Local Resource Person!

Meet Bimala Giri of Barekot Rural Municipality, who joined the Phulbari Community Based Organisation (CBO), and everything changed. Bimala is now a Local Resource Person (LRP), training CBO members across her community, leading agroecological farming practices, and earning her own income.

Today, she facilitates her own group and also trains and supports other women farmers in adopting sustainable practices such as composting, bio-mulching, seed saving, and mixed cropping. Through her role as an LRP, Bimala now earns her own income, supports her children’s education and household expenses, and has become respected within her family and community.

Bimala's journey is proof that when women are given the right tools, training, and trust- They Lead. πŸ’š

In Barekot Rural Municipality, through project in partnership with Fastenaktion and Helvetas Nepal, 15 Community Based Organisation (CBOs) members are setting an inspiring example by actively practicing seed exchange among themselves. Farmers and group members share their self-produced seeds with one another, ensuring that quality seeds remain available within the community at the right time.

This beautiful tradition of seed sharing does more than support farming:
✨ Strengthens local food systems
✨ Preserves valuable native seed varieties
✨ Reduces dependence on expensive external seeds
✨ Builds community cooperation and resilience
✨ Promotes sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture

The CBOs commitment to conserve indigenous seeds reflects the power of community action and the importance of protecting our agricultural heritage as indigenous and native seeds are the backbone of sustainable agriculture!

To transform the local treasure into livelihood, SAHAS Nepal through project in Kailali organised Sweet Making training using the Ash Gourd. In Kailali, Ash Gourd is used to make the famous petha sweet, has long been an underutilised vegetable in communities. While communities in Kailali love petha, most of what is available comes from across the border.

Through the training, the participants learned to produce hygienic, high-quality petha sweets right here at home using a vegetable that grows abundantly in their own backyards. Beyond the skill itself, this is about economic empowerment: these community members are now equipped to start their own small enterprises, sell locally made petha in Kailali markets, and keep the value of their harvest within their own communities.

When local knowledge meets the right skills, communities don't just survive, they thrive.

Meet Hissi Murmu from Jahada Rural Municipality, whose farming journey is transforming through the effective use of bio-pesticides and continuous technical backstopping support. Through the project in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee - MCC, Hissi is accessing improved agricultural practices, regular guidance, and technical assistance.

Hissi has been able to adopt safer and more sustainable pest management solutions that are strengthening crop health and boosting overall productivity. The use of bio-pesticides has n reduced dependence on chemical inputs and also contributed to a healthier farming environment and improved soil quality. As a result, Hissi is witnessing encouraging progress in production and greater confidence in managing her farm.

Strengthening Farmer Capacity through Peer Learning and Knowledge Exchange!

SAHAS Nepal successfully hosted a Cross Learning Visit for group members from Caritas Nepal in Sunilsmriti Rural Municipality under the Project. This exchange brought together community members and local farmers to share knowledge, experience, and best practices.

During the visit, participants gained hands-on exposure to home gardening practices, a household-level intervention designed to promote nutrition security through diversified kitchen gardening and climate-resilient growing techniques. They also explored market linkage activities aimed at connecting smallholder farmers to viable market systems, thereby strengthening income generation and long-term economic resilience at the community level.

Cross learning visits like this serve as a powerful capacity-building tool, enabling communities to learn directly from each other's lived experiences, replicate successful models, and build confidence in locally-led solutions.
