In July 2024, heavy rains caused the West Rapti River to erode a 73-meter embankment in Raptisonari Rural Municipality, putting over 10 villages, 1,500 people, and 3,000 hectares of paddy fields at risk of flooding. Responding quickly, the PREPARE Project, in collaboration with Raptisonari Rural Municipality and NDRRMA, implemented a nature-based solution (NbS) to protect the area.
A 98-meter-long bamboo and sandbag barrier (live crib wall) was built to strengthen the riverbank. This nature-based solution (NbS) helped stabilize the embankment, safeguarding homes and farmland. The project was a joint effort involving CRS Nepal, Caritas Nepal, local authorities, the Irrigation Division, and the Armed Police Force, who provided technical and safety support. When tested by floods in September 2024, the barrier held strong.
Encouraged by the success, local government, in collaboration with development partners, is now expanding the NbS approach using stronger bamboo structures (bamboo porcupines, pile and crib wall) with their own resources.
This initiative shows how nature-based solutions can be cost-effective, sustainable, and community-driven, reducing flood risks while building long-term resilience. The PREPARE Project continues to work with local partners to develop permanent solutions for safer communities.
