🌱 Empowering Women through Zero Energy Ginger Storage! 🌱
CRS Nepal, in partnership with Purdue University and Caritas Nepal, piloted an innovative ginger storage project in Palpa and Pyuthan districts of Lumbini Province.
We worked with 120 smallholder farmers (96% women) to test four zero-energy, low-cost household storage models — Raw Brick, Improved Pit, Hybrid, and Bamboo. Each model could store up to 350 kg of ginger, helping reduce storage losses from 25–30% to just 4%! 🙌

Simple solutions, big impact for women ginger farmers! 🌾💪

In July 2024, heavy rains caused the West Rapti River to erode a 73-meter embankment in Raptisonari Rural Municipality, putting over 10 villages, 1,500 people, and 3,000 hectares of paddy fields at risk of flooding. Responding quickly, the PREPARE Project, in collaboration with Raptisonari Rural Municipality and NDRRMA, implemented a nature-based solution (NbS) to protect the area.
A 98-meter-long bamboo and sandbag barrier (live crib wall) was built to strengthen the riverbank. This nature-based solution (NbS) helped stabilize the embankment, safeguarding homes and farmland. The project was a joint effort involving CRS Nepal, Caritas Nepal, local authorities, the Irrigation Division, and the Armed Police Force, who provided technical and safety support. When tested by floods in September 2024, the barrier held strong.
Encouraged by the success, local government, in collaboration with development partners, is now expanding the NbS approach using stronger bamboo structures (bamboo porcupines, pile and crib wall) with their own resources.
This initiative shows how nature-based solutions can be cost-effective, sustainable, and community-driven, reducing flood risks while building long-term resilience. The PREPARE Project continues to work with local partners to develop permanent solutions for safer communities.

Building on the successful completion the Jajarkot Earthquake Recovery Project (JERP) project in January 2025, CRS Nepal continues to work with the local governments and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) to support the permanent housing reconstruction plans for the earthquake-affected households. Currently CRS Nepal with funding from HRD is supporting the Detailed Damage Assessment of 10,464 households in Aathbiskot Municipality of Rukum (West) district while the NHSRP platform continues to provide technical backstopping support to the overall West Nepal recovery and reconstruction plans and processes of the Government of Nepal. Detailed Damage Assessment (DDA) is crucial in understanding the impact of the earthquakes on buildings and for the preparation of planning for reconstruction and recovery of buildings and infrastructures damaged by disaster. DDA assessments allow categorization of the structural damages of the building and infrastructures and their reconstruction/retrofitting needs. CRS Nepal has mobilized 21 Engineers (surveyors) to complete the assessment in 45 days. Based on the learnings from 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, the GoN plans to support the EQ affected households with cash grants upto NPR 4,00,000 for an owner-driven reconstruction.

CRS Nepal is implementing a project, ‘Reducing ginger storage losses with Women Farmers in Nepal’, which aims at reducing ginger storage losses among women farmers by identifying scalable household-level storage solutions to preserve quality and extend shelf life. Implemented in collaboration with Purdue University, the initiative seeks to empower smallholder ginger producers by strengthening market linkages, enabling off-season sales at higher prices, and increasing their net incomes by at least 30%. By promoting cost-effective storage innovations and leveraging private market pathways, the project focuses on improving the economic well-being of women farmers, enhancing their ability to purchase nutritious food for their families.
