Renowned poet, and winner of Madan Puraskar 2078, Dr. Naba Raj Lamsal read his poems to students and faculties of the Central Department of English, TU on Tuesday, April 18. In an event organized by the Creative Literary Forum at Tribhuvan University under the chairmanship of Forum’s Coordinator Sudarshan Rajbhandari, the poet read about a dozen of his poems, and narrated the story of his transformation from an ordinary village boy to a poet of fame.

He recalled the difficult times including days of terrible earthquake and killer pandemic, when he, as a media person, had to work twenty four by seven in the interest of the general public. Addressing the audience, he said, truth is contextual and is proportional to a set of circumstances while facts remain constant all the time, and as poets, we would side with truth. He also said he has the experience of living together with people of six generations, and their inputs have worked towards shaping his personality as a writer. He answered queries from the members of the audience regarding his life as a poet and a media personnel. He stressed that a poet should also be answerable to his or her creation after death, and so, one has to be extremely careful in writing.

“Sambhavana”, “Beshya Gaman”, “Ghauko Rajneeti”, “Mayako Ot”, “Samay ra Samayako Pratibedan” and “Jhukkan” were some of the poems he read out on the occasion. He also read portions from his epics Karna and Dhara, and read lines of a few of his famous songs.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Dr. Jib Lal Sapkota, the Head of the Central Department of English, lauded poet Lamsal for his spontaneous oration, gripping recital and thoughtful delivery. He said, mere book-based teaching is technical; teaching literature should also involve real-time immersion in creative works, and organizing recitals with writers of fame would be one of the best possible ways. He also expressed his commitment to assisting the Forum for more of such events in the days to come.

Session Chair, Sudarshan Rajbhandari thanked the poet Lamsal, the Department of English and the members of the audience for their participation. He also revealed that the Forum was observing the month of Baishakh as Poetry Month, and would organize poetry workshops and competitions shortly.

The events was also attended by poets and academics Keshab Sigdel, Dr. Mani Bhandra Gautam, Dr. Bal Bahadur Thapa, Deepak Dhakal, Laxman Bhatta, Govinda Ghimire, Mahesh Karki Ksh*tiz, Sudesh Satyal and Mahesh Paudyal.

The event was moderated by Silash Tamang as the MC.
