THE MIND IS A тАЬKINGтАЭ
The mind wanders, but it is not wandering by nature. It wanders because it does not find a place to rest or a medium of happiness.
The mind is not like a monkey; rather it is like a king. EveryoneтАЩs mind is like the king of kings. It will go to a place that likes to go, it will do the job that it likes, it will stay where it likes to stay. If a king is found wandering about in his country, it is wrong to conclude that wandering is his nature.
He is wandering only in the absence of a throne to sit upon. In the absence of the proper seat-a throne-the king keeps walking about.
No respectable man will sit in an untidy place not worthy of him. So, although it is not the nature of the king to keep wandering, he will do so even though he feels tired. He will not set until he can sit on a seat that is worthy of him.
Similarly, the mind, like the wandering king, will not rest in any place not worthy of it, and will not want to remove itself from a place that is worthy of it and which provides greater charm, joy, and happiness. Such a place is where the mind rests, sits, enjoys, and remains enjoying. Thus, it is wrong to conclude that wandering is the nature of the mind.
Nothing in the field of gross creation is so joyful that it will satisfy for all times the thirst for happiness of the mind.
Experience shows that the subtleties of creation are much more charming than the gross. So, if the attention could be led to the subtle fields of creation, and if they could be experienced by the mind by being more charming than the gross strata of creation, they will naturally attract the mind. If there could be a way to lead the attension from the gross to the progressively subtler strata of creation, the mind at every step would find increasing charm. If there were a way of transcending all the relative states of fine creation and getting to the transcendental bliss consciousness, there the mind would find the great joy which transcends the greatest joy of relative existence and achieve eternal absolute bliss. Having gained this absolute eternal bliss the mind never comes out of it. It holds it to such a degree that bliss consciousness becomes infused into the very nature of the mind, and then the mind is bliss consciousness. This happens through the practice of Transcendental Meditation.
