An Update from Saraswati Office Nepal

Today marks the third day since the devastating flood struck Rasuwa, leaving behind unimaginable loss, pain, and uncertainty.

Since the disaster occurred, our Saraswati team at Nepal has been continuously trying to reach our SolHimal children and their families in the affected areas. We have been able to contact some of them, while sadly, many others remain unreachable because the network and communication systems are still unstable.

It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share that, among the families we have been able to reach, some parents and family members of our beneficiaries have tragically lost their lives in the flood. Some of our beneficiaries and their families have thankfully been rescued and brought to safety, but others are still missing. For those families, and for all of us waiting for news, these hours feel unbearably long.

What makes this tragedy even more painful for us is knowing that just a few months ago, in June, we were in Rasuwa, in Timure village, for our quarterly sponsorship distribution.

We remember the village as it was then—alive, warm, and full of familiar faces. We met our children, sat with their families, spoke with the villagers and spent time together.

That is why it is so difficult to see the images and hear the news from Rasuwa today. It is almost impossible to believe that the same roads we travelled, the same homes we visited, and the same people we shared moments with only a few months ago are now facing such unimaginable devastation.

Our hearts are with every child, every parent, every family, and every member of the Rasuwa community who is going through this terrible moment.

We are continuing to do everything we can to reach our beneficiaries and their families. Every phone call, every message, and every piece of news brings both hope and fear. We will continue to contact them in the coming days, again and again, hoping to hear from those we have not yet been able to reach. We will not stop trying. We are waiting, praying, and hoping for good news.

At the Saraswati Nepal office, our entire team is keeping them close in our hearts and prayers. We pray for the safety of those who have survived, for those who are still missing, and for strength and comfort for the families who have lost their loved ones.

At times like this, words feel very small in front of such immense sorrow.

We humbly ask everyone to please keep our SolHimal children, their families, and the people of Rasuwa and the affected areas in your thoughts and prayers.

May those who are missing be found.
May those who have been rescued remain safe.
May the families who have lost their loved ones find strength.
And may Rasuwa find the courage to heal from this unimaginable tragedy.

Today, Wednesday, 26 August, a sudden and devastating flash flood entered the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibet-Nepal border area, causing severe destruction in parts of Rasuwa district, particularly in Timure and Syabrubesi village. The Timure Customs Office area and surrounding villages have also been seriously affected. The flood has continued downstream towards Mugling, with villages along the Trishuli River in Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan also affected and placed on alert, according to the latest news reports.

Our thoughts are especially with our dear children, families and beneficiaries in Timure and the surrounding areas. As the flood came so suddenly, communication with some of our beneficiaries has been difficult. We are doing everything we can to reach them and check on their safety.

We are very grateful to have heard from some of the families we have been able to contact. Many managed to reach safer, higher ground, including nearby hillsides, to protect themselves from the rapidly rising waters. However, we remain deeply concerned for those whom we have not yet been able to reach.

Helicopter services are also flying over the affected areas as rescue and emergency efforts continue. We sincerely hope these efforts will help reach and assist those who may be stranded or in urgent need of help.

To all our dear children, parents and families in the affected areas, please stay safe, remain on higher ground, follow the instructions of local authorities and emergency teams, and keep away from rivers and flooded areas.

We kindly ask all our godmothers, godfathers, well-wishers and supporters to keep the people of Rasuwa, especially our children and their families, as well as everyone affected by this devastating disaster, in your thoughts and prayers. ❤️🙏

From 13 to 19 May, Mr. Patrice BEHRA of SolHimal France and Mrs. Chemila GONSAR of Saraswati Organization Nepal travelled to Basa Village, Solukhumbu district, a remote Himalayan village in eastern Nepal.

The main purpose of the visit was to monitor the animal husbandry project conducted by Basa Foundation, supported through SolHimal to create sustainable livelihoods for the community. Through pig, goat and poultry farming, the project aims to create a sustainable source of income for the community, create local employment and contribute to the long-term support of the village school.

Reaching Basa itself was an experience—a long journey from Kathmandu to Phaplu, Solukhumbu, an overnight stay, followed by several more hours to Basa village through winding mountain roads, muddy tracks and river crossings. Yet, every challenge along the way was met with the warmth and hospitality of the Basa community.

We were warmly welcomed by the villagers, committee members, teachers and students at Shree Shikhar Babuchhiri Balkunja Basic School, the village school which serves as the main educational institution with around 40 children. We worked closely with families to fill in sponsorship forms for children who may benefit from the SolHimal sponsorship programme. The process also gave us a deeper glimpse into life in this remote community. For some parents, providing their exact date of birth was difficult, as birth dates were not always officially recorded in the past. With patience, we worked together with the families to gather the necessary information. Ten applications have already been submitted, with more being prepared.

Educational materials generously brought by our dear sponsor members who visited Nepal were distributed to the village school. (Thanks to our sponsor members🙏) Clothing was also donated to the local families. Recognizing the arrival of the monsoon season, additional support was provided to the school’s headmaster to purchase 40 umbrellas for students. During period of heavy rainfall, many children walk long distances along steep and slippery paths to reach school. (Thanks to Patrice BEHRA for this meaningful initiative)

More than a field visit, this journey was an opportunity to listen, learn and witness the resilience of a community working towards a stronger future. We thank SolHimal France, Basa godmothers and godfathers, donors and well-wishers for standing alongside the children and families of Basa.♥️🙏

We would like to share a small update regarding a temporary delay in sending your godchildren’s letter by post.
The Saraswati team has been regularly visiting the General Post Office in the city, and we have been informed that Nepal post has temporarily suspended the acceptance and dispatch of mail to France, Finland, Norway, and the US due to the current international situation affecting international postal services. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding during this time.
We are also pleased to let you know that after the Nepali New Year, all of your godchildren have been promoted to their new classes and are doing well. They are in good health, continuing their studies, and remain grateful for your love and support. Please do not worry about them.
As soon as postal services resume, we will promptly send all of the letters to your postal addresses.

After successfully completing their half-yearly examinations, the teachers and medical students of Sorig Bumshi School, known as Amchis in Tibetan, departed for the remote Himalayan region of Dhorpatan to begin their annual fieldwork and practical training as part of the Traditional Tibetan Medicine (Sowa Rigpa) program.

Located approximately 371 km west of Kathmandu, Dhorpatan is renowned for its rich diversity of medicinal herbs and alpine plants. The students work closely with their teachers to identify, collect, and study medicinal plants in their natural habitat, gaining invaluable hands-on experience that complements their classroom learning.

The field training continues for approximately four and a half months, from July until the end of October. During this time, the group travels through rugged mountain landscapes and remote villages, often hiking long distances and spending nights in simple mountain huts, shepherd shelters, or caves. These challenging yet rewarding experiences strengthen their practical knowledge, resilience, and deep appreciation for the centuries-old healing traditions of Sowa Rigpa.

In addition to their studies, the students and teachers provide free health check-ups and distribute traditional medicines to people living in remote communities, bringing essential healthcare services to areas where access to medical care is limited.

Meanwhile, at the Kathmandu Sorig Clinic, some medicinal students and Amchis continue to provide medical consultations and care for patients, ensuring that the clinic's services remain available while the rest of the team is conducting field training.

This unique combination of academic learning, practical experience, and community service plays a vital role in preserving the rich heritage of Traditional Tibetan Medicine while preparing the next generation of skilled and compassionate Amchis.

Dear all,

Today we celebrate Zamling Chisang(Universal Prayer Day) one of the most sacred and auspicious days in the Himalayan Buddhist tradition.

According to Buddhist tradition, this day
commemorates the time when Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) purified the land by offering fragrant incense to local deities and protectors. Through his wisdom and compassion, he transformed negative forces into protectors of the Dharma, creating harmony between people, nature, and all beings.

On Zamling Chisang, Buddhists offer incense, recite prayers, raise prayer flags, and perform acts of generosity and compassion. It is believed that the merit of positive actions performed on this day is greatly multiplied. It is a time to pray for peace, good health, prosperity, and the well-being of all sentient beings.

In observance of this sacred day, our team will be visiting the monastery to make prayers and offerings. Therefore, our office will be closed today. We will resume our office work tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 June.

May the blessings of Guru Rinpoche and this auspicious day bring peace, happiness, good health, and harmony to all.

Updates from the Saraswati Office: Quarterly Sponsorship Visit to Rasuwa district ⛰️

Rasuwa remains one of the regions where your support reaches some of the most resilient and inspiring communities. As part of our quarterly Sponsorship Program, the Saraswati team continues to maintain a close and meaningful presence in the district, ensuring that every child receives not only sponsorship support but also encouragement and care.

At the beginning of June, our team traveled to Rasuwa to meet beneficiaries from Dhalphedi, Timure, Ghattekhola, Mendogang, Gongang, Thuman, Tatopani, Pajong, Briddhim, Shyabru, Chilime, Brimdang, Gatling, and surrounding villages. With the monsoon season approaching and road conditions expected to become increasingly difficult, the team decided to begin sponsorship distribution in the Langtang region before commencing distribution in Kathmandu.

Beyond delivering sponsorship support, these visits allow us to spend meaningful time with the children and their families, gaining a deeper understanding of their daily lives while monitoring their educational progress, health, and overall well-being. Through these personal interactions, we can ensure that the support provided by our valued sponsor members continues to make a meaningful difference where it is needed most.

During this visit, we collected individual updates from beneficiaries across the Langtang region, including handwritten letters, school reports, and information about their family circumstances. Many of our Langtang beneficiaries had already received their sponsorship support through our Kathmandu office. We also personally delivered letters and parcels sent by sponsors to their godchildren.

To SolHimal team, committee members and all our valued godmothers and godfathers, thank you for your commitment to the children and families of the Rasuwa–Langtang region. Your support brings hope, opportunity, and encouragement to communities nestled high in the Himalayas.
