As an initiation of research and conservation efforts for the Himalayan musk deer (Moschus leucogaster) in western Nepal, a preliminary survey (Phase I, First Season) was conducted in September 2025 with support from The Explorers Club under its Pathfinder Grant. Building on the findings of this survey, and with further support from The Rufford Foundation, we formally launched Project LAH (Phase I, Second Season) in collaboration with Teka Samuha Nepal. This initiative focuses on engaging local communities through the formation of Musk Deer Conservation Committees to strengthen long-term conservation of the species and its habitat in western Nepal.

Conservation with Ethics
We successfully conducted a one-day interactive workshop on “Ethical Birding and Photography” in the Lumbini area, with generous financial support from The Rufford Foundation.
A total of 17 participants—including amateur birders, emerging photographers, and members of the indigenous community—took part in the workshop. The session focused on promoting responsible and ethical birding practices, especially during the sensitive breeding season, to minimize disturbance and ensure the safety of birds and their habitats.

This workshop was organized as part of the project “Strengthening Community in Conservation of the Largest Population of Sarus Crane in Nepal.”

Promoting conservation with ethics is essential to protect wildlife while fostering a culture of respect and responsibility.

Empowering the Next Generation of Conservationists
We successfully conducted a two-day training program titled “Citizen Scientist for Sarus Conservation” in Lumbini as part of the project “Strengthening Community in Conservation of the Largest Population of Sarus Crane in Nepal,” generously supported by The Rufford Foundation.

Five enthusiastic participants, including two female students, were trained in bird identification techniques, the ecological significance of the Sarus Crane, key threats to the species, and the vital role communities play in conservation. To support their continued engagement, participants were provided with various field gears, including binoculars and field guidebooks. The training concluded with an inspiring morning birding session in the Lumbini area.
Together, we are nurturing passionate citizen scientists for the future of Sarus conservation in Nepal.

Celebrating the 10th Edition on International Snow Leopard Day
On the occasion of International Snow Leopard Day, October 23, we are happy to present the 10th edition of the Snow Leopard Magazine.
Teka Samuha Nepal launched its pre-draft on August 30 during the Snow Leopard Scouts’ Annual Camp in Mustang, in the presence of 43 participants representing various conservation stakeholders — including students, teachers, education chief from Rural Municipality and Ward chairman, field ranger from Division Forest Office and Annapurna Conservation Area Project, journalists, artists, and conservationists.

We are now proud to share this edition with readers across Nepal and among members of our donor community in the USA.
This issue features news, interviews, memoirs, reports, articles, stories, and stunning photographs from snow leopard range countries.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Snow Leopard Conservancy, our long-term financial partner; the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) for technical support; and the Snow Leopard Trust for coordination and photographic contributions. Special thanks also go to our editorial team, contributors, designer, and readers for your invaluable support.

Let us join hands — wherever we are — to speak and act for the protection of this majestic species and the Himalayan ecosystem it represents.

In 2003, Teka Samuha Nepal (TSN) collaborated with the Tiger Rhino Conservation Project (TRCP) under the former King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation—now known as the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Nepal. Through this partnership, TSN provided training to buffer zone user groups on literacy, micro-enterprise development, and legal awareness.

Over the two-year period, we witnessed remarkable changes: many women stood up against domestic violence, and several initiated their own small businesses. We express our sincere gratitude to NTNC, particularly to Dr. Narayan Prasad Dhakal, former Director of TRCP, for his support and guidance.
