Since 1999, IFES has worked to strengthen the electoral management capacity of the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN), promote inclusive electoral reform, strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations and mobilize citizens to participate in democratic processes. Our programs in Nepal have drawn on the full range of IFES expertise and celebrated major achievements over the years in areas s
uch as: assistance to legal drafting, including 2016 support to drafting of 8 post-Constitution electoral laws; support to the ECN to establish a Gender and Social Inclusion unit as well support for various capacity building events with over 94,000 officials trained; expansion of the political and civic participation of marginalized groups in Nepal, with over 250,000 civic and voter education outreach initiatives which reached and educated over 4 million voters across Nepal; engagement of disabled people’s organizations and other community-based groups to collaboratively advocate for the civic, electoral and political rights of persons with disabilities including support for over 50,000 persons from marginalized communities to obtain citizenship certificates, and over 500,000 to register to vote. In the past elections, IFES provided printing equipment and supported production of over 60 million ballots.
