Safe drinking water is now being made more accessible through the use of innovative “Water ATM” machines. These machines allow users to dispense purified drinking water conveniently by using a prepaid Water ATM card, similar to how a bank ATM operates. The system is designed to ensure that communities—especially in urban and peri-urban areas—can obtain safe, treated water quickly, affordably, and at any time of the day.

The Water ATM technology helps reduce dependence on unsafe water sources and minimizes the need for bottled water, thereby also contributing to environmental sustainability by cutting down plastic waste. Users simply recharge their cards and collect the required amount of water from the machine, making the process both user-friendly and efficient.

In this initiative, Nepal Water for Health (NEWAH) has played a key role by introducing and promoting Water ATM systems in selected areas. In Lalitpur district, NEWAH has distributed Water ATM cards to local residents, enabling them to benefit directly from this service. This effort is part of NEWAH’s broader commitment to improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services and ensuring equitable access to safe drinking water for communities.

At NEWAH, we believe meaningful change begins at the grassroots. Our efforts center on practical, community-led solutions that enhance daily life.

In this example, a washing slab is being constructed in collaboration with the community, giving a family access to clean, dependable water and making every day hygiene easier. Small initiatives like this led to lasting, positive impact.

We were pleased to host Sierra Tobin, Water Program Senior Manager from charity: water, USA, during her recent visit to some of NEWAH’s working areas in Sarlahi, Udayapur, and Sindhuli.

As part of the visit, she engaged with Water Supply and Sanitation User Committees (WSUCs), the WASH Board, the Mayor of Haripur Municipality in Sarlahi, and the Chairperson of Rautamai Rural Municipality in Udayapur. She also visited project sites, observed rehabilitation works under the Functionality Programme, and the mini lab established for water quality testing in Sunkoshi Rural Municipality, Sindhuli.

Her visit marks another meaningful step in the strong partnership between charity: water and NEWAH. Through this collaboration, we continue to work toward expanding access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services for communities across the country.

Spending time together, exchanging ideas, and reflecting on our shared goals was both inspiring and motivating for our team. Partnerships like this are essential to creating sustainable, long-term impact and improving lives in the communities we serve across rural Nepal.

We are grateful for your support and commitment, and we look forward to continuing this important work together in the years ahead.

World Water Day – March 22, 2026 💧

World Water Day is observed every year on March 22 to emphasize the importance of freshwater, promote its sustainable management, and raise awareness about the challenges faced by people who lack access to safe drinking water.

The theme for 2026, “Water and Gender: Where water flows, equality grows,” underscores the strong link between access to water and gender equality, highlighting how improved water access can contribute to more equitable and inclusive communities.

On World Water Day, we are reminded that water is essential, yet not equally accessible.

Only a small fraction of the world’s water is safe and available for human use.
Millions of people still walk long distances every day to collect it.

Access to clean and reliable drinking water is not a privilege. It is a basic human right.

Protect water. Use it responsibly. Support sustainable solutions.

Every drop counts.

📢Our recent edition of E-bulletin for Aug 2025- Jan 2026 is here!

This edition highlights key milestones and activities of NEWAH over the past six months. From the Annual General Meeting and
social audits that strengthen transparency and accountability, to continued efforts in strengthening community WASH systems, the bulletin reflects our collective commitment to sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
It also shares updates on current interventions of new water supply systems and rehabilitation support, along with public hearings and community engagement
processes that ensure local voices remain central to WASH governance.

The edition further features the CBME self-monitoring tool, and capacity-building initiatives for communities. A story of change from a school in Sindhuli demonstrates the ripple effect that improved WASH services can have on health, learning environments, and overall well-being.
Together with partners and communities, NEWAH remains committed to ensure the sustainability of drinking water systems and encourage lasting behavior change in sanitation and hygiene practices.

Water covers 70% of our planet, and it is easy to think that it will always be plentiful. However, freshwater is rare. Only 3% of the world's water is fresh water, and two-thirds of that is hidden away in frozen glaciers or otherwise unavailable for our use.

Many of the water systems that keep ecosystems thriving and feed a growing human population have become stressed. Rivers, lakes and aquifers are drying up or becoming too polluted to use. More than half the world's wetlands have disappeared.

Established in 1992, NEWAH is dedicated to helping poor, underserved communities obtain access to WASH facilities irrespective of gender, caste, class, and belief. Its vision is that of a prosperous and harmonious Nepal where every citizen is able to realize their right to safe drinking water, basic hygiene, and sanitation.
