Center for Dalit Women Nepal

Center for Dalit Women Nepal The Center for Dalit Women is a Nepali NGO dedicated to helping Dalit and marginalized women claim their rights, develop economically, and live in dignity

Center for Dalit Women (CDWN) is a national non-governmental organization dedicated to helping Dalit and marginalized women claim their rights, develop economically, and live in dignity. Dalit activists founded the organization in March 2016 after partnering with Empower Dalit Women of Nepal USA (www.edwon.org) to carry forward their work. CDWN is based in Kathmandu but works in rural districts. C

DWN has since partnered with three national NGOs to form the Dalit NGO Consortium, a network that seeks to improve dignified living conditions of Dalit communities. With funding from the Lutheran World Federation, the consortium is implementing a one-year project “Dalit empowerment for Recovery and Fighting against Inequalities” in earthquake-affected Dolakha District. CDWN is taking the lead on ‘Gender Justice’ programming.

As part of our Initiative, CDWN team visited Mahabharat Rural Municipality and spent meaningful time with inspiring Self-Help Group (SHG) women in Wards 4, 5, and 6.

During the visit, we completed endline surveys, facilitated ongoing SHG learning sessions, conducted community awareness sessions and collected stories of change that reflect the real impact of their journey. Members shared how the groups have helped them build confidence, strengthen unity, and bring positive changes in their families and communities.

Closing sessions were also held with Devitar SHG and Nari Utthan SHG, where members received certificates and shared their journey throughout the project. Both groups were handed over to the local government for continued support and sustainability.

Thank you to all SHG members, volunteers, and local government representatives for their support and participation.

Today, on the "𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐔𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲", CDWN organized an elocution competition with support from Kuvre Wustrow and Golbazar Municipality. 14 girl students stood up and spoke on why caste discrimination must end and they were amazing.

Students are the real change-makers. When young voices speak against injustice, communities listen and mindsets shift

We are truly grateful to Mayor Mr. Shyam Kumar Shrestha, Deputy Mayor Mr. Manti Shah, and Municipal Education Officer Mr. Subodh Lama from Golbazar Municipality for gracing the event with their presence. Having local government stand beside this cause gives it so much more meaning and strength. Their presence showed that local leadership stands with this cause and that means a lot.

Congratulations to the winners and to every student who had the courage to take the stage. 👏

Representatives from CDWN, NDSS, and our Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under our Hamro Sahakarya project recently met with Hon’ble Sita Badi, Minister of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security to formally submit two critical attention letters aimed at driving policy reform, as part of our Community Action Plan.

Our advocacy focuses on:
📌 Effective Implementation of Gender-Responsive Budgeting (GRB) at the Local Level.
📌 Strengthening the GBV Prevention Fund: Enhancing the mobilization and utility of the fund to provide immediate, accessible support for survivors.

These concerns are deeply rooted in the lived experiences and collective recommendations of women and marginalized communities. Our goal is to bring these grassroots concerns to the center of policy discourse and strengthen inclusive, accountable governance.

We remain committed to partnering with policymakers to build a just, equitable, and inclusive society.

Under our project “Dealing with the Past, Participation of Marginalized Groups, and Methods of Non-Violent Conflict Transformation in Nepal,” supported by Kurve Wustrow, we are engaging school adolescents for social change.

Recently, we organized a couple of school competitions on the theme “What is your role to end caste-based discrimination in the community?”Students shared inspiring ideas, personal reflections, and creative messages on equality, respect, and inclusion for all. Their active participation and confidence showed that young people can become strong voices for positive social change and help build a discrimination-free society .✊

To recognize their creativity and commitment, prizes were distributed to the participants and winners.

Under our project “Dealing with the Past, Participation of Marginalized Groups, and Methods of Non-Violent Conflict Transformation in Nepal,” supported by Kurve Wustrow, our women’s groups in Siraha district are actively taking their learning back to their communities.

Recently, women facilitators led community discussions on important social issues including caste-based discrimination, child marriage, and social inclusion. During the sessions we also shared information about available support and referral mechanisms, including CDWN’s toll-free helpline, Nepal Police support services, and other local protection and justice mechanisms, so that women and community members are aware of where and how to seek support when facing violence, discrimination, or other rights-related issues.

We are also grateful for the support and participation of local government representatives, who contributed to making these sessions more informative and impactful.

Together, we continue working towards a more just, peaceful, and inclusive society in Nepal.

Under our 𝐇𝐚𝐦𝐫𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐲𝐚 Project, CDWN and NDSS continue facilitating Community Action Plan (CAP) sessions to engage communities in addressing critical social issues. Recently, CAP sessions were conducted in Sarlahi focusing on violence against women and child marriage.

With the support of representatives from Nepal Police as facilitators, participants were able to learn more about legal provisions, reporting processes, and available support and protection mechanisms for survivors. The session encouraged open discussion, awareness, and collective action towards creating safer communities.

This initiative is supported by the Embassy of Finland in Kathmandu with technical support from UN Women Nepal .
