For millions of home-based workers, home is their workplace—a place where they produce, earn, and contribute to the economy, often while carrying unpaid care responsibilities too.
It’s time to see the work that happens behind closed doors, recognize home-based workers, and ensure they have access to decent work, social protection, fair wages, and rights.
Work is work, wherever it happens. 🧵🏠

A 9-to-5 has a clock. Care work doesn’t.
While one person’s working hours are counted, another may spend the entire day cooking, cleaning, caring, and keeping the household running — often without recognition, pay, or a break.
If the work is real, the hours should count too.
It’s time to recognize and value unpaid care work.

Yesterday, 05/08/2026, HBWCSN visited the Chapagaun group in Godawari Municipality to discuss an important step toward the recognition of home-based workers.
Our team held a productive meeting with the Honorable Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the Chief of the Employment Section (रोजगार शाखा), focusing on the establishment of a Front Desk within Godawari Municipality. This initiative aims to facilitate the validation and official recognition of home-based workers as formal workers, ensuring they are acknowledged, counted, and connected to the services and protections they deserve.
We sincerely appreciate Godawari Municipality for their time, openness, and commitment to advancing the rights and dignity of home-based workers. Together, we move one step closer to achieving recognition and social protection for all.

HBWCSN successfully conducted an IFWEA Study Circle Discussion on 27 July with chapter leaders from Gokarna and Jorpati, facilitated by Ms Prabha Pokhrel. The discussion focused on the key challenges faced by Home-Based Workers (HBWs) and identified three priority areas for action:
🔹 Recognition and rights of HBWs
🔹 Technology-induced stresses
🔹 Climate-induced stresses

As an initial step, participants agreed to prioritize recognition and rights by engaging local governments to establish Labour Desks for the registration of informal workers. A Charter of Demands was prepared and submitted to the Deputy Mayor of Gokarneshwor Municipality, marking the conclusion of the first Study Circle.
Together, we continue working towards recognition, dignity, and social protection for Home-Based Workers.

25 Years of the Kathmandu Declaration: Celebrating a Legacy of Solidarity

HBWCSN was honoured to be part of "From Kathmandu Declaration to Regional Transformation: 25 Years of Home-Based Workers' Solidarity", celebrating 25 years of collective action for the rights and recognition of home-based workers across South Asia.

The event brought together government representatives, regional leaders, development partners, and home-based workers to reflect on the progress made and reaffirm our shared commitment to dignity, recognition, decent work, and social protection for all home-based workers. We also welcomed the launch of the South Asia Regional Planning Platform, strengthening regional collaboration and knowledge sharing to build safer and more inclusive workplaces.

As we celebrate this important milestone, HBWCSN remains committed to advancing the rights of home-based workers in Nepal and working in solidarity with our regional partners to create lasting change.

Together, we stand. Together, we rise. Together, we achieve.
