Migration should never come at the cost of dignity. Subash’s journey shows the power of access to justice. With the right support, migrant workers can stand up, speak out, and seek accountability. His story highlights why safe migration and access to justice matter.

As global leaders gather in New York for the International Migration Review Forum 2026, stories like Subash’s remind us of what these commitments mean in real life. In Nepal, IOM continues to support the Government in advancing objectives.

IOM Nepal recently conducted a series of community engagements raising awareness on safe, orderly and regular migration in partnership with Forum for Nation Building - FNB Nepal and close coordination with Chandrapur Municipality, Rautahat, Madhesh. The IOM Chief of Mission also took this opportunity to observe the on-ground situation, visit the Municipal government, and connect directly with beneficiaries.

The sessions witnessed a total of 649 participants (including community people and students) comprising 425 women and 224 men. Key discussion topics included legal and regular labour migration pathways, risks of irregular migration, human trafficking, smuggling, and forced labour, the link between climate change and labour migration, migrant workers’ rights, government migration services including social security for migrants and their families. Participants engaged actively through discussions and questions, with facilitation teams providing legal information, and distributing Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to support continued awareness.

“In places where migration is a lifeline, awareness is proving to be one of the strongest forms of protection,” said IOM Nepal Chief of Mission. “By amplifying migrant voices and strengthening access to reliable information, IOM is reinforcing protection mechanisms, empowering civil society and migrant communities, and contributing to safer, more informed migration management across Nepal.”

These community-based activities served as inclusive and localized platforms that strengthened knowledge, encouraged informed decision-making, and enhanced awareness of rights and protection mechanisms among both adults and youth. Together with partners and local stakeholders, IOM continues to lead efforts to improve access to reliable migration information and promote safer migration pathways at the grassroots level.

From Headlines to Human Stories: Strengthening Migration Reporting in Nepal, 17-19 April 2026

The training on migration reporting has successfully concluded, bringing together journalists and media professionals for in-depth discussions on ethical reporting, migration governance, and human-centered storytelling.

Over three days, participants explored key issues including responsible use of migration data, ethical interviewing practices, countering misinformation and disinformation, and improving accuracy in migration-related reporting. The sessions also strengthened understanding of migration concepts, labour migration governance, and the importance of evidence-based narratives.

The training created a valuable platform for peer learning and dialogue between media professionals, policymakers, and IOM migration experts from its Regional Office for Asia and Pacific and Nepal, reinforcing the role of the media in shaping informed and responsible public discourse on migration.

This training was jointly organized by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MoLESS) and International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nepal through the support from IOM Development Fund.

Empowering Communities with Information for Safer Migration

IOM Nepal, in partnership with Forum for Nation Building - FNB Nepal and close coordination with the local government, conducted a series of Community Mobile Clinics (community awareness sessions) in Omsatiya Rural Municipality, Rupandehi District, Lumbini Province with efforts to build stronger communities empowered to undertake safe, orderly, and informed migration routes.

IOM could reach 384 participants (246 women and 138 men) providing accessible and practical information on:

1. Legal and regular foreign employment pathways and procedures
2. Risks of forced labour, human trafficking, and human smuggling
3. Online scams and visa fraud
4. Migrant workers’ rights, protection measures, and available support services

Interactive discussions with participants led to peer-learning through shared experiences, building a safer environment to ask questions and strengthening their understanding of safe migration practices. This initiative demonstrates the need for continued localized and community-driven awareness effort.

IOMs Community Mobile Clinics continues to serve as an inclusive platform for dialogue, experience exchange and furthering community trust while enhancing awareness on migration, on migrant rights and available protection mechanisms.

Together with partners and local stakeholders, IOM Nepal continues to take a leading role in strengthening access to reliable migration information and promoting safer migration pathways for all.
