IOM Nepal recently conducted a series of community engagements raising awareness on safe, orderly and regular migration in partnership with Forum for Nation Building - FNB Nepal and close coordination with Chandrapur Municipality, Rautahat, Madhesh. The IOM Chief of Mission also took this opportunity to observe the on-ground situation, visit the Municipal government, and connect directly with beneficiaries.
The sessions witnessed a total of 649 participants (including community people and students) comprising 425 women and 224 men. Key discussion topics included legal and regular labour migration pathways, risks of irregular migration, human trafficking, smuggling, and forced labour, the link between climate change and labour migration, migrant workers’ rights, government migration services including social security for migrants and their families. Participants engaged actively through discussions and questions, with facilitation teams providing legal information, and distributing Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to support continued awareness.
“In places where migration is a lifeline, awareness is proving to be one of the strongest forms of protection,” said IOM Nepal Chief of Mission. “By amplifying migrant voices and strengthening access to reliable information, IOM is reinforcing protection mechanisms, empowering civil society and migrant communities, and contributing to safer, more informed migration management across Nepal.”
These community-based activities served as inclusive and localized platforms that strengthened knowledge, encouraged informed decision-making, and enhanced awareness of rights and protection mechanisms among both adults and youth. Together with partners and local stakeholders, IOM continues to lead efforts to improve access to reliable migration information and promote safer migration pathways at the grassroots level.
