Transformation Through Rupantaran Class; Experience of Alina Lohar

Alina Lohar, an active member of Rupantaran group, is a Grade 8 student at Shree Janakalyan Secondary School in Sanfebagar Municipality 4, Achham. Before joining the Class, she described herself as a quiet and shy girl and growing up in a rural setting, she felt hesitant to express her thoughts and feelings openly, and cultural norms further limited her confidence.

Her journey toward change began when her class teacher informed about the formation of an adolescent girls’ group for girls aged 13 to 17, which would participate in Rupantaran Classes conducted twice a month, focusing on reproductive health, mental health, gender-based violence, and creating safe spaces for girls. Alina was immediately excited and eager to join, and with her parents consent, became an active member of the group. Once she began attending the classes, Alina experienced gradual yet meaningful changes in her understanding and behaviour. She learned about adolescence; what it means and how to discuss the physical and emotional changes that occur during this stage of life. The sessions encouraged her to open up, allowing her to share her problems more comfortably. She no longer avoided school and began to feel less isolated. Her confidence grew as she practiced expressing her thoughts during group discussions and activities.

Alina also became more aware of the cultural practices in her community, especially those related to menstruation. While it is still common for women and girls to be required to stay outside during menstruation due to traditional beliefs, Alina now feels empowered to question them, and she has also noticed positive changes emerging in her family’s attitudes. Her parents regularly ask about her learnings, making her feel proud and supportive.

One of the aspects Alina enjoyed most about the Rupantaran Classes was the interactive and practical approach to learning. Unlike traditional classroom lessons, it included games, activities, and open discussions that made learning enjoyable and engaging. Through these experiences, she developed a sense of belonging within the group and discovered new strengths within herself. The transformation she experienced has been significant. Alina now believes that the knowledge and self-awareness she has gained will help her contribute to positive change in her home and community.

SEBAC-Nepal is currently implementing Safe and Enabling Environment for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (SAFE-Girls) Project in Achham district in collaboration and funding support from Good Neighbour International (GNI) Nepal, and UNFPA. The project has formed a total of 10 Adolescent girls’ groups which included 250 girls, and 1 Young Women Group of 25 members, with the establishment of mentor/mentees, till date; and has reached a total of 3916 populations (Female 2697; Male 1219) through the project.

SEBAC-Nepal successfully concluded the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence on 10 December, coinciding with International Human Rights Day. The campaign had begun on 25 November, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The closing ceremony was carried out across various locations of Achham district, where a series of meaningful activities; including school-based programmes, rallies, interactive sessions, and community engagements, were organized.

Guided by the campaign slogan “Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” this year’s initiative helped raise awareness, amplify community voices, and create safe spaces for dialogue on digital safety and gender justice.

As this campaign comes to an end, our commitment remains stronger than ever. SEBAC-Nepal continues its journey to uphold human rights, end gender-based violence, and raise voice against all forms of discrimination and violence; today and every day.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed every year from 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women); to 10th December (Human Rights Day); has officially begun.

SEBAC-Nepal marked the first day of this global campaign in Achham district of Sudurpaschim Province, celebrating this year’s theme:
“Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.”

In an era where digital spaces shape everyday life; online harassment, cyberstalking, non-consensual sharing of images, misinformation, and technology-facilitated abuse have become increasingly pervasive. These forms of digital violence disproportionately impact women and girls, limiting their freedom, safety, and participation in public life.

Where Gender-based violence (GBV) as a whole still remains a global human rights crisis, affecting women and girls across all identities and backgrounds, risks are even higher for those in humanitarian contexts, women with disabilities, adolescent girls, older women, and many who experience intersectional and hidden forms of violence in their daily lives; both online and offline.

The 16 Days of Activism serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness, challenge harmful norms, demand accountability, and strengthen prevention efforts at community, national, and global levels. It calls on all of us; individuals, families, institutions, and governments to stand together and champion a world free from violence.

Let us unite, open the door, take a stand, and work collectively to end violence in all its forms.
