When Jiranya arrived in Chitwan, she saw more than old, worn classroom walls.

She saw an opportunity.

Using her artistic skills, she dedicated her volunteer placement to transforming blank spaces into colourful educational murals that now brighten the school and create engaging learning environments for students every day.

Her contribution wasn't about doing what everyone else was doing, it was about recognising where her own strengths could make a meaningful difference.

Every volunteer brings something unique.

Whether you're an artist, teacher, photographer, healthcare professional, sports coach, gardener, musician, engineer, or simply someone eager to learn and share your skills, there are many ways to contribute to our local schools and communities in Chitwan.

What skills could you bring to Nepal?

If you've been thinking about volunteering abroad and want to use your talents in a meaningful way, we'd love to hear from you.

Every volunteer has something valuable to offer.

Not every contribution begins in a classroom.

Some volunteers bring creative skills. Others help organise activities, capture stories through photography, support environmental projects, or share knowledge they've developed through work and life.

No two volunteers are the same, and that's exactly what makes every placement unique.

💬 Which skill do you think has the power to make the biggest difference in a school setting? Tell us why in the comments👇🏽

Once you've experienced Nepal, a part of it stays with you.

To everyone who's volunteered with VCD Nepal, whether it was this year or many years ago - we'd love to hear from you.

Every volunteer leaves with a different story. For some, it's the friendships they made. For others, it's the lessons they learned, the host family who welcomed them, or the moments that changed their perspective.

💬 Looking back on your time in Nepal, what's one experience you'll never forget? Share your story in the comments, you might inspire someone to start their own journey.

It's often the smallest moments that volunteers remember most.

The walk or cycle to school each morning.

Sharing fresh fruit during a break.

Learning a few words in Nepali from local students.

Watching creativity and confidence grow in the classroom.

Volunteering isn't just about the project itself, it's about the people you meet and the memories you create together.

💬 Which of these moments would you be most excited to experience in Nepal? We'd love to hear what draws you to volunteering in Nepal.

During her time in Chitwan, volunteer Jiranya used her creativity and artistic talent to transform old school walls into engaging educational artwork for local students. 🎨

Working independently on the project, she helped breathe new life into learning spaces by turning worn walls into colourful visual tools designed to inspire creativity and education within the classroom environment.

Projects like this highlight how individual skills can be used in meaningful and practical ways within local communities.

Thank you, Jiranya, for sharing your time, creativity, and care with the students and school community.

Most people picture volunteering as big heroic moments.

Reality?

It’s early morning chai. It’s helping children practise English through games. It’s eating dal bhat with your host family. It’s learning far more than you expected.

At VCD Nepal, cultural exchange matters just as much as community work.

Sometimes the smallest moments leave the biggest impact.

“My volunteering experience with VCD Nepal was wonderful from start to finish.”

From a warm airport welcome to living with a Nepali host family, Maili’s journey was more than just volunteering, it was full cultural immersion.

During her time in Chitwan, she supported students at Thoriket School, experienced a completely different education system, and built meaningful connections within the local community.

And it didn’t stop there! After her placement, we helped organise her Annapurna Base Camp trek, ensuring a smooth and memorable experience from start to finish.

“Why is there a fee to volunteer?”

VCD Nepal is a locally run organisation without external funding.

Programme fees help cover accommodation, meals, airport pickup, orientation, and ongoing support — ensuring volunteers are prepared and communities are supported sustainably.

Unlike large international agencies, these costs stay within Nepal and directly support local partnerships.

It’s about making the experience work, for both volunteers and communities.

There’s a difference between visiting a place and experiencing it.

Volunteering in a school in Chitwan means becoming part of everyday life, not just passing through.

You’re not on the sidelines. You’re in the classroom, building connections, and learning just as much as you’re contributing. Sometimes even getting your hair plaited.

That’s what makes the experience stay with you.
