NO CLIMATE JUSTICE WITHOUT INDIGENOUS WOMEN’S JUSTICE.

During UNGA81, National Indigenous Women’s Federation (NIWF) and Federation of Indigenous women of Nepal in America FIWNA stood together near the United Nations in New York, raising a collective call for Indigenous women’s rights, leadership and meaningful participation in climate action.

Indigenous women are land protectors, knowledge holders, culture bearers and frontline leaders. We demand rights, recognition, leadership, meaningful participation and climate justice.

✊From Nepal to New York, Indigenous women stand together for climate justice.

आदिवासी जनजाति महिलाको न्यायबिना जलवायु न्याय सम्भव छैन।

UNGA81 को अवसरमा, राष्ट्रिय आदिवासी जनजाति महिला महासंघ (NIWF) र Federation of Indigenous Women of Nepal in America (FIWANA)

On 23 September 2026, National Indigenous Women’s Federation (NIWF) actively participated in a climate justice rally outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York, demanding climate justice, accountability, reparations, recognition of Indigenous rights, loss and damage, climate finance and an equitable transition away from fossil fuels.

Representing Indigenous women from Nepal, we brought the realities of climate disasters to the global stage. Recent floods have swept away homes, lands, livelihoods and sacred connections but they cannot wash away our identity, culture, dignity and rights as Indigenous Peoples.

Indigenous women are not just affected by the climate crisis we are knowledge holders, land protectors and frontline leaders for climate justice.

From 7–11 September 2026, the National Indigenous Women’s Federation (NIWF), in collaboration with Pawanka Fund successfully conducted a five-day Orthography Development Workshop for the Byasi Sauka Language at Kathmandu Peace Inn Hotel, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu.

The workshop brought together Byasi Sauka community members, language experts and local representatives to collaboratively develop and validate a standardized writing system for the Byasi Sauka language.

This initiative reflects our shared commitment to preserving Indigenous languages, strengthening cultural identity, and ensuring that the Byasi Sauka language is documented, promoted, and passed on to future generations.

We sincerely appreciate the dedication and active participation of all community members, facilitators and partners who contributed to the success of this workshop.

Grateful to FIMI for giving us the opportunity to participate in the Regional Lab Workshop on the Strategic Use and Local Implementation of CEDAW General Recommendation No. 39 in Asia.

Together, we are strengthening our understanding of CEDAW GR39 and adapting it to our diverse contexts to advance and defend the collective and individual rights of Indigenous women and girls.
Indigenous women have always been leaders, advocates, and agents of change and we will continue moving forward together, building solidarity across Asia.

Heartfelt thanks to CIWA, CIPO, International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) all the facilitators and the Indigenous women leaders from across Asia for creating this powerful space for learning, sharing, solidarity, and collective action.
