Across parts of Chile, engineers have found a clever way to combine renewable energy with water conservation. Solar panels are being installed above irrigation canals that carry water to farms and rural communities. The panels stretch across the canals like long roofs, capturing sunlight to generate electricity while the water flows beneath them.

This design offers two major benefits at once. The solar panels produce clean power that can be used locally or fed into the electrical grid. At the same time, the shade created by the panels reduces the amount of sunlight hitting the water surface, which slows down evaporation — a serious problem in hot and dry climates.

By protecting the water from direct heat, the canals lose less moisture during long summer months, helping preserve valuable water resources for agriculture. The project shows how infrastructure can serve multiple purposes when thoughtfully designed. Instead of competing for land, energy production and water management work together in the same space, turning ordinary irrigation canals into efficient sources of both electricity and conservation.
