As the use of plastic increases, plastic waste is also growing. Burning plastic releases harmful gases that pollute the air and can increase the risk of respiratory diseases. Therefore, waste management is not only an environmental issue, but also a matter of our health.

On 30th April, 2026 YALC Members hosted a discussion; Khulla Aakash / Climate Café at YUWA Office, Lazimpat. These discussions brought together participants from diverse backgrounds to talk about something that has been unfolding right outside our city’s windows.
Topic focused on:
• “Clearing the Riverbanks: Protection or Punishment?“ Who really pays the price when a riverbank is cleared in the name of climate action? ”
Key learnings from the session:
• The people living on riverbanks never chose to be there, their presence is rooted in histories of poverty, discrimination, and displacement.
• Clearing settlements without proper planning creates immediate crises from basic sanitation to menstrual hygiene to gender based violence to mental health issues among the ones being displaced.
• Climate risks like flooding and pollution are real but a climate safe city must protect its most vulnerable, not displace them further.
• Government accountability and transparent planning are not optional, they are essential.
• Real solutions exist. They just require the will to include everyone.

On 30 April 2026, Jivan hosted a Khulla Aakash session at Maharajgunj Medical Campus with 15 medical students . We swapped the heavy textbooks for real-life stories, using a case-based approach to break down the big issues that affect us all.
Topics focused on:
• Safe Spaces: Why we need places where we can speak our truth without being judged.
• Menstrual Talk: The basics of menstrual health and keeping it clean and dignified.
• Standing Against Violence: Recognizing the signs of GBV and how to look out for one another.

Key learnings from the session:
• We learned that behind every „case“ is a human being who just needs to feel heard and safe.
• Menstrual hygiene is just basic health and shouldn’t be a source of shame.
• Violence isn’t always physical; we learned how to identify different forms of GBV in our daily lives.
• Change doesn’t start in a clinic; it starts with us having these so called „uncomfortable“ talks with our friends and family.
